Samsung’s Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner hacked in same fashion as iPhone 5s

Do you remember last year when those hackers managed to bypass the Apple Touch ID system with a mold of the correct fingerprint? That same technique works for the Samsung Galaxy S5's new fingerprint scanner as well. Except with the S5 the user is granted access to your Google Wallet, PayPal, and other sensitive information. Where as the iPhone 5s Touch ID system still prevents users from accessing digital wallets and making payments in the App Store. The Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint sensor is far from a 'wow factor", in fact other than being hackable and being far too priveldged from a security standpoint, it doesn't work that well as a fingerprint scanner. Check out the next page for a bit more information on this newly discovered bug, as well as a fun video and GIF of the process in action.

As you can see from the video above; using some wood glue, a smartphone camera, a steady hand, and some unmentioned tools; a thief can obtain your phone and access your PayPal account balance. PayPal has admitted that if this were to happen you would be covered by their customer warranty completely and fully condones the use of the Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner to verify purchases using their Android application.

As I mentioned other than the fact that this flagship phone has a massive security flaw, the fingerprint scanner doesn't function that well according to some reviews. It often requires two hands to use it, and multiple attempts at scanning. It's been said that it doesn't work that well for people with thin skin or smaller hands. Samsung's fingerprint system even allows an unlimited amount of attempts at accessing the device, unlike Apple's Touch ID which prompts users for a physical password after a number of failed attempts.

WhXNwHa

In closing there seems to be a real hiccup in the production of fingerprint scanners, they're 'hackable' and inconsistent, though I can proudly say it seems as if Apple's Touch ID is the leader of the pack, and oddly the oldest of the bunch. Way to go Apple on succesfully releasing a top-of-the-line product once again. Let me know what you think of this news in the comments below. If you're an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S5 and feel like defending your precious device do that in the comments below as well.

Thanks for reading your news here at iPhone-Developers, I truly appreciate it. Let me know if you find any of my information provided above to be inaccurate. Comment with spelling and grammar corrections if you want to be a real proper pal, as I write these articles in plain text most of the time. I'll correct away, to your heart's content.

Photos of the iPhone 6 Front Panel Get Leaked

Many reports suggest that Apple will release two larger iPhones this year: one with a 4.7-inch screen and another with a 5.5-inch screen. This rumor has been floating around for a few months now, but today is the first time we see an actual leak of a larger iPhone’s part.

Photos of what appears to be the iPhone 6 front panel have leaked on Weibo, showing that it will indeed be significantly larger than the current iPhone 5s. Check them out:

The front panel in the leaked photos appears to be the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 while there is still no leak of the other 5.5-inch variant.

24-bit Music Coming to iTunes

There are many rumors surrounding Apple’s iTunes store these days. In a world of declining music sales, Apple is fighting to change things around with several new additions to their service. The latest piece of leaked information comes from music blogger Robert Hutton, who claims that Apple may be adding high-resolution music to iTunes soon.

Hutton explains in his blog post:

“For several years, Apple have been insisting that labels provide files for iTunes in 24 bit format – preferably 96k or 192k sampling rate. So they have undeniably the biggest catalog of hi-res audio in the world.

And the Led Zeppelin remasters in high resolution will be the kick off event – to coincide with Led Zep in hi-res, Apple will flip the switch and launch their hi-res store via iTunes – and apparently, it will be priced a buck above the typical current file prices.

That’s right – Apple will launch hi-res iTunes in two months.”

Although we are unsure about Hutton’s track record, we do know that Apple has indeed been interested in high-resolution music. There’s also definitely a market for 24-bit music, as the Pono Music Kickstarter (which promises to bring a 24-bit music player to the world) already has 17,000 backers and almost $6 million pledged.

Apple has also been rumored to be working on a major overhaul for iTunes, a music streaming service similar to Spotify, and introducing the iTunes Store to Android. If all of these rumors are true, Apple will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

So, who’s looking forward to high-res music?

Is This The iPhone 6? New Renderings Based On Leaked Schematics

As the smartphone industry moves towards larger sizes, many people are expecting Apple to release an iPhone around the 5” inch mark. Nearly all of the high-end flagship Android devices have screen sizes of around 5” inches, so there is definitely demand for larger smartphones. Rumor has it that Apple will be releasing two versions of the next iPhone 6: one with a 4.7-inch screen and another with a 5.7-inch screen.

Although some people who are already used to the iPhone’s current size may think that’s too big, it is definitely possible to fit a 4.7-inch screen in a package not much larger than the current size. Motorola proved this with their flagship Moto X device, which is nearly the same size as the iPhone 5s, but packs a 4.7-inch screen.

Japanese magazine MacFan recently published alleged schematics for the two upcoming iPhones, and thanks to a designer by the name of Ferry Passchier, those schematics have come to life in some awesome renderings.

MacRumors – who commissioned the design project – explains the key differences in the new leaked schematics:

The iPhone designs in the drawings include several differences compared to the iPhone 5s. The top power button has been moved from the right side to the left side of the device. The rear camera on the larger model is also shown as protruding slightly from the rear shell, as is the case with the current iPod touch. The camera flash has also reverted back to a round-design unlike the one found on the iPhone 5s.

Although we are still months away from seeing the next iPhone, it’ll be an interesting ride as we continue to see more and more leaks. Stay tuned for more!

Virgin Mobile Offering Off-Contract iPhone 5S For Only $385

For those of you looking to grab a new iPhone off-contract, Virgin Mobile may be your best bet. Virgin Mobile (owned by Sprint) is now offering the 16GB iPhone 5s and 16GB iPhone 5c off-contract for only $385 and $315 respectively. These prices are MUCH lower than Apple’s $649 and $549 price tags.

You’ll need to sign up for an unlimited data plan with Virgin Mobile (which starts at $35 per month), but since there’s no contract involved, you can simply pay for the first month and cancel the service right after. Even with the extra $35 charge, you’ll still save well over $200 on the iPhones. But you’ll need to hurry on the deal because it is a web exclusive and will only be available for a limited time.

It is important to note that these iPhones will be locked to Sprint’s 3G/4G network since that is what Virgin Mobile uses. However, there are many unlocking services available online. One of the more popular unlocking services, Chronic Unlocks, is offering Virgin Mobile iPhone unlocks for about $130, so you’ll still be saving some money if you choose to go this route.

Apple Shows Indie Game Developers Some Love With New Game Section

It appears that Apple has begun showing independent developers some love by creating a new section in the App Store specifically for awesome games made by indie developers.

The new section is named “Indie Game Showcase” and features many quality games that are worth your attention. Apple describes the new section:

Often made up of just a few dedicated members, independent studios prove that what really matters is the size of your dream. In each Indie Game Showcase, we celebrate a popular game and its creative team, highlighting the developer’s titles along with their favorite games from other studios.

Apple is also celebrating this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California with its “10 Essential Indie Games” and “Best New Games” section on the App Store.

iPhone 6 Specs Get Leaked!

New information on the next generation iPhone has leaked by the reputable Sonny Dickson. Sonny has had a decent track record with Apple leaks in the past, showing off iPad casings long before their actual releases. Thus, we’re inclined to believe some of these new rumors.

The specs of the upcoming iPhone 6 were shared via his Twitter account through a number of tweets:

·   iPhone 6 will be 0.22 inches thick #JustSaying

·   Ultra-Retina screen will be 389 ppi #JustSaying

·   The new Apple A8 processor will run at 2.6 GHz. #JustSaying

·   These specs could be the real thing #JustSaying

Although that “JustSaying” hash tag is incredibly annoying, the tweets do offer some interesting information. The current iPhone 5S is 0.30 inches thick, has a Retina Display with 326 ppi, and an A7 processor clocked in at 1.3GHz.

First Screenshots Of the Upcoming Family Guy Game Released

Fox and gaming studio TinyCo announced back in December that they would be teaming up to work on a Family Guy game. While there wasn’t much info released at the time of the announcement, the companies did confirm that the game would launch sometime in 2014. Well, it looks like that time is very near…

The first official screenshots of the game were released today, giving us a peak at what to expect from the upcoming game. TinyCo is apparently working very closely with the makers of the show to give a very authentic feel to the game. As you can see from the screenshots, the game already looks like it captures some of the funniest moments of the show.

We’re expecting the game to have a similar playing style to the extremely popular Simpson’s “Tapped Out” title. Nonetheless, we’ll find out all of the juicy details very soon as TouchArcade believes the game could be out as soon as next month. Stay Tuned!

Screenshots Of iOS 8 Get Leaked, Show Off New Apps Apple Is Working On

Earlier today, leaked screenshots appeared on a Weibo account, showing off what might be three new apps that Apple is working on. Spotted by 9to5Mac, the screenshots are apparently of Apple’s upcoming iOS 8 software, and give us a little peak at what the Cupertino company is working on. As you can see in the picture, Preview, TextEdit, Healthbook, and Tips are all brand new apps that we’ve never seen before.

Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac has had quite an excellent track record  and confirms that these screenshots have some truth to them, “Even though the source of the images is absolutely uncertain, I have confirmed with several sources that these shots are legitimate.”

The Preview and TextEdit apps will supposedly be designed to make it easier for users to view files stored in iCloud, while the Healthbook app will track and store fitness statistics. It is still unknown at this time what exactly the Tips app will be for.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more info so stay tuned!

iOS 7.0.6 Adoption Reaches 13.3% After Just 48 Hours

After only 48 hours of being available, the latest iOS 7.0.6 update reached an impressive 13.3% adoption rate in North America. The update fixes a major SSL vulnerability so it’s easy to see why so many people were excited to get their hands on it.

Chitika reviewed over tens of millions of North American ad impressions from February 21st to February 23rd for the study:

“As seen in the above graph, the rate of North American iOS 7.0.6 adoption rose significantly on February 23, 2014. While not equaling the 48-hour totals following the public iOS 7 release, the steep rate of adoption is a promising sign that a majority of iOS users could be running the updated OS within the next week. Back in the summer of 2012, North American iOS traffic generated by users of another security-related iOS update, version 5.1.1, took close to three weeks to reach 58%. While not guaranteed, initial adoption figures make it reasonable to assume iOS 7.0.6 will reach that mark in a shorter amount of time.”

Are you already on iOS 7.0.6? If not, you’ll definitely want to get on it soon. Jailbreakers won’t have to worry either as the Evasi0n jailbreak tool has been updated to support iOS 7.0.6.

iOS 7.1 Official Release In March

According to a new report from our friends over at 9to5Mac, Apple won’t be releasing the final version of iOS 7.1 to the public until some time in March. The software is currently in its fifth beta and available for registered developers to test out, but we won’t see an actual release until next month…

“Reliable sources say that Apple is currently planning to ship iOS 7.1, the first significant update to iOS 7, in March. The iOS 7.1 update is said to not have any “secret features,” and it will basically be what we have been told to expect by the past five betas: some user-interface tweaks in the Phone app, an improved Calendar app, speed improvements, and numerous bug-fixes.”

BGR has also reported the same thing, claiming that the final release will indeed be in March.

Infographic: The Fastest Browsers By Platform

The folks over at New Relic have just posted an interesting infographic revealing which Internet browsers are the fastest for each platform. Head inside to check out the full infographic, I think you’ll be surprised with the results…

"No matter how quickly your app code performs, if the end user's browser is slowing things down, your application risks delivering a less-than-optimal user experience. So, which browsers are the fastest and which are the most popular? Using our Real User Monitoring (RUM) feature, New Relic culled the average browser speeds experienced by end users of nearly 3 million application instances. Here's who came out on top."

New Apple Ad: On The Runway With iPhone 5s [Video]

Apple has just added a new promo video for the iPhone 5S on both its Youtube channel and iPhone webpage. The new ‘On the runway with iPhone 5s’ ad features footage from the Burberry Womenswear fashion show from last September. Check it out:

It’s interesting that Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts joined Apple only a month after the two companies collaborated as Apple’s new SVP of retail.

Nonetheless, although we haven’t seen the new ad appear on TV yet, we’re expecting it to make the rounds soon.

Apple Patches Even More Jailbreak Exploits In Latest iOS 7.1 Beta 5

Apple has taken a number of steps to patch the iOS 7 Evasi0n jailbreak in the lastest iOS 7.1 software.  In the fourth beta of iOS 7.1, which was released two weeks ago, Apple patched the kernel exploit used in the popular Evasi0n jailbreak tool. Today, Apple takes things one step further with the release of the fifth beta, patching the AFC sandbox as well…

While the evad3rs haven’t officially announced the death of the iOS 7 jailbreak in iOS 7.1, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Apple will most likely have the jailbreak patched.  We suggest all jailbreaks who want to keep their jailbreak to update to iOS 7.0.4/5 and avoid the 7.1 betas.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more info so stay tuned!

Will Apple be in this years Super Bowl ad lineup?

It’s that time of year again! The time when the best TV commercials air during the Super Bowl. Well, it used to be that way. These days everything comes earlier than it’s supposed to, kinda like how there wasn’t really a Black Friday last year. Now it’s time for the Super Bowl and many people can’t wait to see what all the companies have conjured up this year for the biggest stage in the world.

Apple likes to try to keep everything a secret even to the point of hiding if they will have an ad during the Super Bowl. In the past Apple has advertised during the big game, but not every time. It’s actually been a while since the last time we saw Apple take an ad spot. While we ponder if Apple will return or not, take a look at a few ads from the past.

Lee Clow tweeted an interesting tweet that gives a vibe that we might actually see an Apple ad during the Super Bowl.

Now that you have reminisced from Apple’s legendary ads, are you hoping to see a new ad to help celebrate their 30th anniversary or possibly better yet, give us a taste of things to come? Personally, I’d love to see the Budweiser frogs make a comeback! What’s your favorite Super Bowl commercial?

Apple pledges to end hiring discrimination against long-term unemployed

Apple joins a new program to help end discrimination against those who have been unemployed for a long time and are seeking jobs. Apple isn’t the only company onboard with the President Obama’s new program and is standing with these corporations. Matter of fact 300 businesses are taking the pledge to support the program.

A few of the companies include Walmart, Ford and General Motors. 21 of America’s biggest businesses and 47 of 200 are taking the stand against discrimination against long-term unemployed. New hiring practices are said to be implemented. President Obama says that long-term unemployed citizens is one of the major issues in the U.S. job market.

Many executives plan to make an appearance with the POTUS on Friday, but CEO Tim Cook is not on the list of attendees.

An executive order from the President declaring there will not be unfair practices against long-term unemployed citizens was also made as. Not only is President Obama creating this program for other companies, but is making this a federal government policy as well.

Facebook announces release of a new app called ‘Paper’

There have been rumors of a new app brewing in the Facebook application factory and today confirms that the social network giant is indeed creating a new app. The app is called ‘Paper’ which seems to be a Flipboard styled newsfeed app. This newsreader app will be released on this coming Monday.

From what the video shows, this app actually looks quite stunning! The animations looks fluid making it a nice looking newsreader for all your favorite subjects. Paper will combine news articles, videos, photos and your Facebook friends posts. Some of the content will be from agencies like The New York Times and TIME Magazine.

Paper mimics a lot of what Flipboard looks like with the ability to, well, flip through pages from left to right and pull down on an article. What’s nice about his app is the articles take up the whole screen from edge to edge.

Facebook Paper (teaser 002)

Paper makes it easier to share stories right from within the app itself without leaving the app. You can Like, Share and Comment within the post itself.

After taking a look at the promo video, do you think you will give it shot on Monday or are you content with Flipboard? iOS and Android will be able to download from their respective stores on Monday.

PayPal looking to partner with Apple as a mobile payment option

Today there was an alleged claim that PayPal wants to partner with Apple to become one of the mobile payment options. The story was feed to us by Re/code and was citing some unnamed sources who said “willing to white label parts of it’s payment service.” PayPal is also offering to handle the dirty work for Apple, trying to make a strong case for being a reliable payment service.

Apple is somewhat reluctant to make PayPal the primary payment service, but that doesn’t mean they will rule them out and could actually land a partnership of some sorts. Reports are saying that Apple is committed to a mobile payment platform and as the main source of payment without the help of another service.

Tim Cook has taken more interest in mobile payments options and has indicated a vision of using the fingerprint scanner as a mean to make payments using an iPhone. Touch ID has only scratches the surface with the capabilities that could be used even in the near future. Cook has also shown signs of developing an e-wallet function using Touch ID.

Touch ID

PayPal is making quite the push to become a big partner with Apple. PayPal is one of the few ways to pay for App Store, iTunes and Apple purchases. I could see why PayPal would want to take the partnership to the next level. Mobile payments are becoming popular these days and seems as though we are starting to see more progress into making payments easier to do with our phones.

SwiftKey Note now available for iPhone and iPad

Last week we brought to your attention of SwiftKey’s new app called SwiftKey Note. This new app is a brand new way to takes notes faster and efficiently. Today SwiftKey’s app hit the Apple App Store. Note was created to make taking notes easier with next word prediction.

If you are familiar with Android, you more than likely have heard about or have used the popular third party keyboard, SwiftKey. The app maker is now trying to bridge the gap between the to top dog mobile device competitors, Android and Apple. With SwiftKey Note claims to be able to make typing easier with next word prediction, built for speed and all while lookin good at the same time.

Check out the video for an inside look!

From the video you can some really cool features. Here is the full list of features offered with SwiftKey Note:

  • Faster, easier note taking – with three next-word suggestions and personalized auto-correction.
  • It learns from you – the more you write, the more tailored your predictions become.
  • Organize your notes – group related notes together in notebooks, label and categorize your notes with tags for easy searching.
  • Evernote personalization – let SwiftKey’s prediction technology learn from your archive.
  • Evernote sync – sync newly created notes across devices or to the cloud and import and create new notebooks and tags with your Evernote account.
  • Easy formatting – swipe the word suggestion bar to the left to reveal bold, italic, underline, indent and bullet points options.
  • Share your notes – using AirDrop, Messages, Mail or Copy to Clipboard, as well as Evernote sync.
  • Multilingual – get contextual word suggestions in up to three languages simultaneously.
  • Track your stats – get real-time analysis of your typing productivity including Efficiency, Keystrokes Saved, Typos Corrected, Words Predicted and Words Completed.
  • Easy on-boarding – a fun and engaging tutorial introduces new users to SwiftKey’s prediction technology.

One of the neat things about SwiftKey Note is that it takes the stock iOS keyboard and meshes it together with their own app to give you a unique typing experience. At the top of the keyboard there is a row with next word predictions to choose from while typing. The app memorizes previous typing habits and does a fine job of giving you choices of what you will more than likely type. After a while, if you type certain phrases frequently, you won’t need to even touch a letter, the words will appear on the top row. Pretty cool!

You can download the app for free in App Store. Are you gonna give is shot? Let us know what you think!

Saurik shares what jailbreak tweaks and apps are on his phone

Ever wonder what jailbreak tweaks and apps developers and hackers use on their devices? There are hundreds of options to choose from, which ones make it as daily drivers? One of the main people in the jailbreak community, Saurik, posted a list of what mods he uses on his device.

If you’re new to the jailbreak world, Saurik is the founder of Cydia and as you can imagine he probably gets asked a lot of what mods he likes to use. Today we get to take an inside look at what he uses on his device. You might be surprised about a detail I found interesting. Take a look at the list and tell me if you spot what I am talking about.

“Cydget (PhotoExample, CyDialer), Cyntact, Cyueue, Veency, Five Icon Dock,WinterBoard (None), RingerX VIP, Voicemail Forwarder, Safari Download Manager, Barrel (Roll-Away), Activator (Volume HUD Tap = iWhiteboard, Volume Both Up/Down = SpringFlash, Status Swipe = SBSettings (Serious SBSettings HD)), Bars, CallBar, DietBar, DietBulletin, f.lux, FlashyStatus, FolderCloser, GlyphPatch, Graviboard, Harlem Shake, LowPowerBanner, MarkThatMessage, NoCoverFlow, NoNewsIsGoodNews, OpenNotifier (Messages), Password Pilot Pro, Sleep to Lock, SwitcherMod, Tab+, TetherStatus, TypeStatus, TypingPrivacy, YourTube, 3G Unrestrictor.”

From the list, can you point out the detail I was referring to? Looking at the list, it reveals Saurik is not on iOS 7, but still rockin out iOS 6. He explains…

“I am not certain what to do about iOS 7. Apple ruined the web browser by adding the “scroll up for navbar” feature: it is horribly distracting and entirely useless. I could just remove it, but they also bring up a solid bar now with the back button… :(. On iOS 6 they simply nailed it: the HUD was entirely gone except for a few transparent buttons that were always present; I seriously now do most of my browsing on my iPhone (I’m typing this response on my iPhone, in fact), but I simply can’t use iOS 7 Safari. When I have time I might try to do some major surgery to “fix it”, but until then I am on iOS 6. (That said, I also rely on a ton of these extensions, and only very recently have some of them been ported. iOS 7 also screwed up the address book, and they use colors everywhere like red… red means “this is dangerous or is an error”, not “edit my alarm”. I’m just distraught.)”

I can certainly understand what Saurik means concerning the new design of iOS 7. Ever since I have used it, I still feel as if the overhaul was pre-maturely released and unpolished. But us modders look at things through a whole different perspective than your average user. A happy medium would have been to keep the same functions, buttons and shortcuts, etc and simply change the theme.

Saurik voices what I can imagine many people have struggled with concerning this transition into iOS 7. When you bake yourself so deep into an ecosystem that operated just how you design it, you don’t want to lose it all from updating to a new OS. So at this point it’s a waiting game for extensions like what he talked about in the remarks to update and be ported over to iOS 7.

The whole thread is worth reading over at Reddit. There are a few more answered questions to check out too. Since you now have an idea of what a modder has on his device, do you have similar mods or are hitting up the Cydia store now?

Let us know what mods you like to run and if you are on iOS 7 or holding down iOS 6.

Apple TV gets its own category in the Apple online store

 width=

Along with some of the changes we have seen in the Apple Store today that include a Valentine’s Day theme is the Apple TV now has its own category in the Apple online store. Prior to the changes the Apple TV was listed simply as an accessory but now is considered its own product line.

Apple TV has become one of the company’s main projects and there have been speculations of an Apple television coming soon. But even if Apple were to make a television, we would likely see an upgraded Apple TV as well.

Some reports we saw last week told us of development of Apple working on gaming setups enabling Bluetooth game controllers to function right along side of the Apple TV. Apple is also looking into adding more live programming.

More to come for sure concerning the Apple TV. Stay tuned here for more updates about the Apple TV!

Donald Trump disapproves of Apple’s decision of not making large iPhones

Donald Trump blasted out some tweets today explaining his viewpoint of why Apple is falling and goes as far to say he has sold all his Apple stock. Some of this reaction is from the continuous reports of Apple’s stock and sales not really doing all entirely well.

Even though the holiday sales were actually record settings, the stocks still struggled and the overall picture is what Apple is looking at. When it comes to the new iPhone 5c, there weren’t great sales living up to expectations.

Donald Trump took his expressions to Twitter ranting about why Apple is struggling.

Anyone else get the mental picture of Steve Jobs barrel rolling in his casket? Donald has never been the one to really hold back any of his opinions, especially about business management. To me it sounds like in reality he likes the iPhone but his deal breaker is the smaller screen in comparison to Samsung’s devices.

Donald isn’t the only one who would like to see Apple make a large screen iPhone. Many of us have been screaming for a larger iPhone for years now. With that said, I think Mr. Trump needs to read blogs like iPD because we keep up with all the latest news and rumors concerning the iPhone. Just this month there have been reports of the likelihood of Apple making a large screen iPhone and possibly could happen this year.

Samsung isn’t the only company who makes large screen phones and that’s what to me is some of the missing talking points on rants like this. Think about, how many Android devices currently being sold are the same screen size as an iPhone? Hardly any. In fact, the majority of Android devices rock a large screen. While some people consider the screen size a deal breaker, there are many more reasons of why someone would choose an Android device over an iPhone. For example, depending on the Android device, the price is a huge factor. It doesn’t take long for a price tag to drop on an Android phone, which makes it that much more available for customers.

Obviously, we could beat this dead horse to death, but Trump does make some valid points about the need for some diversity among iPhone models. But I like Apple’s style. Do you agree with Donald or are you perfectly comfortable right where Apple sits?

New video of iOS in the Car surfaces

More developments are rise, as speculation seems to be building with progression of Apple’s project iOS in the Car. Last week we saw some images of iOS in the Car, but today we are dawned with a video. The short 88-second clip is a simulation video showing off the Maps application.

iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith posted a video of iOS in the Car as simulator desktop application and in the video is a screen capture of what the dash would present, along the left side is an iPhone interacting with the dash’s screen.

Steven was kind enough to include some features listed in the video description, check em out below:

                        • Supports Multiple Resolutions
• Supports touchscreens (presumably single-touch?), hardware buttons, wheels and touchpads
• Does not support multitasking - car display will always show same current on-screen app as iPhone (which can be locked/asleep)
• Whitelisted to specific Apple apps - no public API for developers [yet?]
• Has no keyboard UI - voice recognition as input
• UI clearly subject to change
• Missing functionality in video is due to iOS Simulator not containing all the stock iOS apps

iOS and Android operating systems in vehicles seems to be one of the main focuses this year. Tim Cook has said that iOS in the Car is an important part of the Apple ecosystem. Apple’s ecosystem is one of the finest around and I can envision with Apple of how intriguing to make iOS part of a daily commute. For the most part, we have our phones at home and work, but we don’t really have a way to use the technology as of now. Sure there are Bluetooth enabled features, music and talking functions with some car accessories. But to have a fully integrated Os in the car would be a complete set.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Apple does with iOS in the Car and see what possibilities there are. What features would you like to see in the upcoming iOS in the Car?

iOS and OS X will not merge this year

With the 30th anniversary of the Mac behind us we want to look ahead towards the future of our beloved Macs. Last week Jason Snell of Macworld interviewed Phil Schiller, Craig Federighi, and Bud Tribble about the Mac’s future. During the conversation there was indications pointing that there will be no merge of iOS and OS X.

“It’s obvious and easy enough to slap a touchscreen on a piece of hardware, but is that a good experience?” Federighi said. “We believe, no.”

“We don’t waste time thinking, ‘But it should be one [interface]!’ How do you make these [operating systems] merge together?’ What a waste of energy that would be,” Schiller said. But he added that the company definitely tries to smooth out bumps in the road that make it difficult for its customers to switch between a Mac and an iOS device—for example, making sure its messaging and calendaring apps have the same name on both OS X and iOS.”

Gotta love those jabs at Microsoft, Windows 8 and Surface! Don’t forget about Google’s new touch-enabled Chromebooks. Obviously there is a great divide of how Microsoft and Apple want their device experiences to be like. Apple does not want a touch-enabled Mac experience and Microsoft feels it adds to the experience. Apple likes to keep operating systems separate.

“The reason OS X has a different interface than iOS isn’t because one came after the other or because this one’s old and this one’s new,” Federighi said. Instead, it’s because using a mouse and keyboard just isn’t the same as tapping with your finger. “This device,” Federighi said, pointing at a MacBook Air screen, “has been honed over 30 years to be optimal” for keyboards and mice. Schiller and Federighi both made clear that Apple believes that competitors who try to attach a touchscreen to a PC or a clamshell keyboard onto a tablet are barking up the wrong tree.

While OS X may not combine with iOS, that doesn’t mean there will not be some similarities or enhancements that look like iOS or even sync up some features like AirDrop and notifications. Specualtions from around the Mac world is that OS X will not get the same overhaul as like what we saw with iOS 7. More than likely there will only be some tweaks and brushed up effects and such.

Mac owners it’s your time to sounds off! Do you want to see a huge overhaul for OS X like what we experienced with iOS 7? Personally, I think I nice change would be fitting, but it’s not a deal breaker for me if OS X does not get a iOS 7 makeover. However, I would love to see it cleaned up and updated with a fresh new look that doesn’t necessarily have all of what iOS 7 sports.

Unlock your hotel room door with your iPhone

Imagine checking into your hotel without a card key like we have gotten used to for quite some time now. Soon you will have the option to use your smartphone to unlock your room’s door at a hotel. There are only a couple hotels with plans of using this technology and should be here later this year.

Airports use rather convenient check-in technology to make life a little easier by skipping check-in desks and going from point A to point B without any interruptions. Hotels are now looking to implement the same concept in their check-in services. Soon you won’t even need to stop by the front desk to check-in.

Aloft Hotel in Manhattan or one in Silicon Valley will soon be able to take advantage of this new system coming later this year.

Guests of these properties will receive a message on an app with a virtual key. The key will be able to unlock the door with a tap or twist of the phone using Bluetooth technology. Supported devices will be the iPhone 4S or newer models and Android phones running Android 4.3 (Jellybean) or newer.

“Robert Habeeb, president of the First Hospitality Group, which is the owner of 55 hotels in the U.S., says he pulled out check-in kiosks at two of his Holiday Inn hotels after finding that most guests ignored them. He found that many travelers will sacrifice speed or ease to talk with a staff member and ensure their room has the right view or location, or to try for an upgrade. Other guests may still want to be greeted when they arrive.” – WSJ

While some people might like the interaction with the front desk personnel, I think some travelers will appreciate skipping steps to get to their room. Personally, I would use this service if there were no need to address anything to the front desk. It would be great to simply head directly to the room, especially if I just got back from a long day’s worth of work.

What do you think? Is this a service you would like to use in the near future?

Rumor: Suppliers being gathered for the ‘A8’ processor

Three suppliers are rumored to be prepping for the upcoming ‘A8’ processor. Amkor Technology, STATS ChipPAC and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering are of the companies included in the rumor to handle orders for the ‘A8’ chip, according to DigiTimes. The new chip will more than likely power 2014’s iPhone and iPad upgrades.

Amkor and STATS both claim to have 40% of Apple’s futures chip packaging orders and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering picks up the rest.

Production of ASE’s 20-nanometer chip making process is set to begin in the second quarter of 2014. Another rumors has it that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has chip orders for some time now, but in actuality rival Samsung has fulfilled all the company’s mobile processors here in the USA. Yet again TSMC has tripped the rumors this year they will split orders with Samsung.

The A7 processor powers the current iPhone 5s, iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display, which  has been the first time Apple has used the same chip in all of the latest iPhones and iPads. With that said and as history shows with iPhone release dates, lately, we shouldn’t expect another iPhone until this fall.

Manage multiple Instagram accounts with ‘Instapload’

Instapload is a new app that you can catch in the App Store and it allows you to manage multiple accounts, download and upload Instagram photos. This might be an app that might not last long in the App Store, so be sure to grab it while you can. Hopefully it will be an app that will last.

WSJ: Apple Will Release Two Larger iPhones This Year

We reported earlier today about an analyst claiming that the iPhone 6 design was already complete and included a 4.8-inch design. Well, a larger iPhone now looks even more likely as the Wall Street Journal is reporting the very same thing. However, WSJ believes that Apple will actually release two larger iPhones (instead of the one reported by Timothy Arcuri), and will scrap the plastic iPhone 5C model.

The new report from the Wall Street Journal also claims that one of the new iPhones will have a screen size of 4.5-inches, while the other one will be a “phablet” with a screen larger than 5-inches.

Both Larger iPhones will feature metal casings and will be released sometime this fall, while the iPhone 5C will be killed off.

Larger screens are quickly becoming the new smartphone standard as every high-end Android phone has a screen size around 4.7-inches and larger. Even huge phablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have seen incredible success with over 10 million units sold within a couple months of release – something that critics never expected when the Note series was first unveiled.

There’s definitely a push in the market for larger smartphones and Apple will be definitely be making the right move by releasing two bigger iPhones.

Apple submits new mood-based advertising patent

Image: techbeat.com

Apple submitted an interesting patent that concerns mood-based advertising, which could indicate more evidence of iWatch elements. The patent includes aspects of mood-based advertising including what apps are used, music preference and social media. The patent doesn’t stop there; it will also implement physical characteristics.

Some of which is part of the patent is:

“Mood-associated physical characteristics can include heart rate; blood pressure; adrenaline level; perspiration rate; body temperature; vocal expression, e.g. voice level, voice pattern, voice stress, etc.; movement characteristics; facial expression; etc …”

Something to keep in mind is that patents actually don’t make it into many products, they are basically ideas companies do not want copied by others or beat the competition to the punch. Another thing to consider is that this patent deserves a little attention because of the continued momentum of an expected iWatch. An iWatch with such features would require new types of sensors. The new sensors would be interesting to see the functionality.

This patent is something to keep an eye to see if there is any word to action. We will have to wait and see. What do you think? Do you think this is part of the iWatch design or is it just Apple being Apple playing the patent game?

Leaked screenshot of SwiftKey’s iPhone note app with word prediction

SwiftKey Note for iOS (EVLeaks 001)

@evleaks posted a new screenshot of a new app under development, SwiftKey Note. This is a note-taking app on iOS with word prediction. SwiftKey is one of the most popular Android keyboards and is now making an attempt to be part of the iOS platform.

From the image above all we can tell from it is that the app is primarily a note-taking app with word prediction, but seems to be using the stock iOS keyboard. Unless if the developers have mirrored a keyboard theme to match what we are all used to. The iOS keyboard app is pretty much irreplaceable unless you jailbreak your device.

If SwiftKey’s keyboard app were to make it to iOS it would be my number one keyboard to use. If you have had the chance to use SwiftKey on Android, you would know what I mean. The keyboard makes typing much simpler and easy to use. The predictions are state of the art.

SwiftKey is ever improving and actually gives users ability to test out their beta projects. Check out the video below of what SwiftKey looks like on Android.

Keyboard app competition is rising and there are some quality keyboards coming out and not only for phones and tablets, but smartwatches. Flesky has made its way over to smartwatches like Galaxy Gear. As a matter of fact, Fleksy has their own iOS app available to download which includes their keyboard with a few other perks as well.

Fleksy keyboard (screenshot 001)

Apple’s stock iOS keyboard in people’s opinion is one of the Apple’s greatest weaknesses; I’d have to disagree with such a bold claim. Personally, I have had good experiences with Apple’s keyboard. There were times where I could type out a whole blog post without any issues and felt comfortable doing so. However, once you experience Android and use SwiftKey’s keyboard it is hard to retrain yourself to type on an iPhone again. SwiftKey is a great keyboard and I’m sure anything they produce will be welcome among the Apple community.

Personally, I would use SwiftKey’s keyboard over Apple’s iOS keyboard if I had the choice. Their apparent note-taking app might be a nice taste of great things to come. Here’s hoping!

iPhone 6 Design Finalized, Includes 4.8-Inch Display And 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Well folks, it has been a long time coming, but it looks like a larger iPhone may actually become a reality soon. While almost all of the iPhone’s competitors have screens around the 5-inch mark, Apple has for a long time gone against increasing the screen size. However, a new report from an analyst at Cowen and Company claims that Apple has already chosen its design for the iPhone 6, and it includes a 4.8-inch display.

Analyst Timothy Arcuri issued a note to investors yesterday claiming that the iPhone 6 would bring a screen just under the 5-inch mark, as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity. A very well-respected Apple analyst by the name of Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed back in September that Apple would be increasing the iPhone’s screen size. However, both analysts believe that the new iPhone’s screen will not exceed 5 inches because of Apple’s “unwavering principle of one hand use.”

Other than the new screen size and speedier Wi-Fi feature, Arcuri also believes that Apple is planning some “key software innovations” that will give the company an advantage over its competitors. Apple will supposedly use iBeacon, Touch ID and Passbook in a new system of mobile payments.

The iPhone 6 is rumored to launch sometime around September this year.

Apple Promises Fix For iOS 7 Crashes In Next Update

We’ve definitely enjoyed iOS 7 since it’s release here at iPD, but we have to admit that it definitely does have its fair share of problems. While some of us have had a fantastic experience, others have had their idevices plagued with constant crashes. It’s been incredibly frusterating, but Apple has just promised us a fix.

Today, Mashable recived an official statement from an Apple spokesperson on the matter, confirming that the company is aware of the problem and working to fix it in the next software release.

 Mashable reports:

“Since Apple released iOS 7, its completely revamped operating system for the iPhone, reviews have been mixed but mostly positive. However, a glitch that has quietly plagued iPhone users — the “white/black screen of death,” a bug that abruptly soft reboots the smartphone — will finally be addressed in a future iOS 7 update.

“We have a fix in an upcoming software update for a bug that can occasionally cause a home screen crash,” Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller told Mashable.”

We’re expecting to see the fix in the iOS 7.1 update, which is already on its fourth beta. However, Apple may also consider releasing a minor iOS update specifically to address the “white/black screen of death” bug.

Have you experienced any crashes on your iOS 7 device? Let us know in the comments section below!

Beats Music Doubles Free Trial Period After Experiencing Launch Problems

Beats Music introduced their subscription service yesterday, which goes into direction competition with Spotify, Rdio, and other well known music streaming services. Unfortunately, the company apparently wasn’t very well prepared for such a high volume of users, which caused new registrations to go offline.

Reports started coming in last night from users who were unable to register and log on to the service. Today, CEO Ian Rogers addressed the issue with a letter updating us on the situation:

Huge thanks to everyone for making our launch day yesterday so successful. We've been blown away by the love that made us the #1 Music App in the iTunes Store.

Due to the extremely high volume of interest in our service some users are experiencing issues. Most people are unaffected but our priority is to give everyone a great experience. We prepared for issues like these, have a plan, and are going to hold off on letting more people in while we put this plan in action.

For those of you that claimed your name in the lead up to launch, we still have your username reserved and we'll be in touch with your invite. We appreciate your support.

Everyone who registers this week will get an additional seven days added to their trial.

We're staying focused on bringing you the best music experience from the people who know what song comes next. Stay tuned, and thanks for being excited about Beats Music.

Ian Rogers

CEO

Although things weren’t exactly off to a perfect start, the app did still have a very successful launch. Beats Music became the #1 music app in Apple’s App Store in less than 24 hours of availability.

You can download Beats Music on the App Store for free now and enjoy a 7-day free trial. Those who register this week will also get an additional 7 days added to their trial. After the trial is over, the service will cost $9.99 a month. AT&T customers, however, can get a 90-day free trial, as well as Beats Music on all their lines for only $14.99.

From Uncarrier to Unbanking, manage your money with T-Mobile

T-Mobile is surely on the move and very active these days. Recently TMO began offering customers the option to leave their current carrier and join the T-Mobile family. Not too mention they will provide you with a Break Up Letter to present to your old carrier. Classic stuff if you ask me. Today, not only can you be part of the Uncarrier Movement, but also manage your money with their new banking system.

Mobile Money with T-Mobile offers a new style of personal banking that includes a prepaid Visa card, mobile app and no-fee checking account.

“Not content with upending just one industry, T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) today announced the company is extending its Un-carrier consumer movement to personal finance – transforming smartphones into personal money managers that can free people from excessive fees they often pay to use their own money.

The company calls this next phase of its consumer revolution Mobile Money by T-Mobile®.

“We’ve already transformed how Americans use and pay for phones, tablets and wireless service; why stop there?” said John Legere, president and chief executive officer of T-Mobile. “Millions of Americans pay outrageous fees to check cashers, payday lenders and other predatory businesses – just for the right to use their own money. Mobile Money shifts the balance of power for T-Mobile customers and keeps more money in their pockets.” T-Mobile Press Release

Last year banking fees went on a rise with ATM fees, checking account fees and other various forms of fees. Those fees add up and TMO is trying to help by offering feeless banking.

The press release goes on to say:

“With Mobile Money, registered T-Mobile wireless customers pay $0 for things they do every day. No charge for activation, monthly maintenance, in-network ATM withdrawals, or for replacing lost or stolen cards. No minimum balances required. No more worrying about overdraft fees. And no unnecessary trips to the bank or a check casher.”

Mobile Money also lets you perform normal banking services like mobile deposits by scanning checks into the app, pay bills and make purchases.

t-mobile mobile money app

T-Mobile says that currently customers will be able to use over 42,000 ATMs without worries of withdraw fees. You can sign up by clicking here or wait till Friday to pick up a Visa card at T-Mobile stores and other participating retailers.

I think this is a cool new service offered by TMO. These days there are so many capabilities we can do with our smartphones and mobile banking has become an appreciated convenience. Last year Google released their debit card and Boost Mobile presented a similar service. Personally, it wouldn’t bother me to have less fees, every dollar counts and I like consolidation. If I were a T-Mobile subscriber I’d probably give it try. On the other hand, I have the Google debit card sitting in my wallet with no money loaded onto it.

What are your thoughts? Is this something you could use?

Candy Crush Saga trademarks ‘candy’ targeting app developers

King, creator of the popular game Candy Crush Saga filed a trademark claim for the word ‘candy.’ Yes, you read that correctly. Someone is indeed trying to trademark the word candy. The claim was filed last February and guess what? They won and now developers are getting emails asking to remove the word from any app name containing the word candy.

The registered claim is limited to only what pertains to games and even clothing. The claim went live January 15th, 2014 and only five days later developers began receiving messages from the App Store to remove the word or prove their name does not infringe on King’s rights.

“Lots of devs are frustrated cause it seems so ridiculous” says Benny Hsu, the maker of All Candy Casino Slots – Jewel Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land

Hsu contacted King’s IP paralegal and was given this response... “Your use of CANDY SLOTS in your app icon uses our CANDY trade mark exactly, for identical goods, which amounts to trade mark infringement and is likely to lead to consumer confusion and damage to our brand,” reads Hallstrom’s reply. “The addition of only the descriptive term "SLOTS" does nothing to lessen the likelihood of confusion.”

Let’s break this down in terms we can relate to and no better example is our beloved Apple. It is a no brainer that Apple is not going to go after the fruit, but if an electronics company tries to implement the word apple in the name of a product line, you better believe Apple will challenge that company.

Regardless, I think this is one of the most ridiculous trademark claims I’ve seen in a long time. I could understand if the whole name of Candy Crush Saga was used, but the generic dictionary term candy? This make me wonder what other general words will be flagged.

What’s your thoughts on this new claim? Weigh in, in the comments.

Possible leaked screenshots of iOS in the Car [gallery]

Troughton-Smith posted the images without any sort of description and has yet to answer any questions about the screenshots from Twitter. Jump inside take a look for yourself!

Apple Patches Jailbreak in New iOS 7.1 Beta 4 Release

We were all excited to see Apple seed out iOS 7.1 beta 4 to developers yesterday, but it may actually not be all good news. After digging around in the new software, iH8sn0w has discovered that Apple may have patched the kernel exploit used in the iOS 7 jailbreak...

iH8sn0w tweeted earlier today:

This means that we should expect not to see any jailbreak support for iOS 7.1 beta 4 and higher. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the exploit will be patched in the final version of iOS 7.1, but it’s now very likely. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Add animations to banner notifications and app switcher with ‘Animer7’

Animer7 is a new jailbreak tweak found in BigBoss’s repo in Cydia. This new tweak allows you change the way animations are presented in the banner notifications and app switcher.

Animer7 is the updated version from Animer to function with iOS 7. If you purchased Animer you’re in luck! Animer7 is a free upgrade for those who bought the predecessor.

Animer7 Screenshot

Once inside Animer7’s settings you are greeted with three options, which include Notification Banners, Multitasking switcher and Extras.

The first two options allow you to basically change the way animations look in the notification banner and app switcher. From the way you pull em and select the options.

For the notification banners you can change the incoming and outgoing notification animations. The banners can be changed to top, bottom, left, right and none. Fade and zooming effects can be added to the animation style as well.

The app switcher can have the fade effect activated to slide to top or slide from the bottom as you swipe through the apps.

The Extras section is rather random in considering of the rest of Animer7’s type of mod. But are welcomed tweaks that allow you to remove separators for Control Center sections and hide the Newstand. So if you have a mod that does this job, you now have an app that does both.

One of the cool features of Animer7 is the ability to test out the changes without the need to apply the mods and perform your own test by sending a notification to see how everything looks. Animer7 lets gives you a test drive before you apply the modification.

If this sounds like a mod you want to download, then head over to the BigBoss repo and get it for $1.99 for first time purchases.

Colorize your idevice’s UI with the new jailbreak tweak ‘Fancy’

Now available in Cydia is the newly released jailbreak tweak called, Fancy. This repo lets you colorize your idevice’s interface such as the menus. Mitch Treece is the developer who made this new mod and is also responsible for Touch ID tweak called Touchy.

Since the release of evasi0n iOS 7 jailbreak many of us have been anticipating more mods to be released and now we are starting to see em roll in and with style! Fancy turns that boring silver/grey menu into a colorful display of icons. If you have an iPhone 5c, I see this as a must have mod to match the rest of the colorful device.

There is a “Global Tint” option, where you can choose a color. By default from there Fancy will change the color to every interface element of iOS 7. Users will be able to pick from red, orange, yellow, green, blue, light blue, and purple.

Fancy also allows the user to change individual elements to the interface of iOS 7. For example, if you want to change the banner, simply head over to that particular cell and configure your desired colors.

Not only can you change the color but also you can change the animation style. For now, the banner is the only cell that can be changed by color and animation. Animation options are default, fade, slide left and slide right.

This is a great tweak and will only set you back a buck. I think it is worth trying out. Let us know if you download the mod! Fancy is located in the ModMyi repo.

Bye bye Google Schemer

Another Google app got the ax today and joins the piling list of apps that are getting phased out. Last year Google started to thin out apps and features built in the ecosystem and Google Schemer is the latest to be laid to rest.

Today Google will no longer be supporting Schemer but will let you download you information until February 7th, 2014. If you’re not familiar with what Schemer is, basically was meant for you to discover ways to make the most your day. For example, find activities, events or restaurants to check out. A Google+ account was required and there were abilities to share the discoveries with your friends.

Here is a Google+ post from Schemer:

“The time has come for Schemer to power down.

Schemer launched in beta over a year ago to help inspire and motivate people to do more awesome stuff, and though the app is shutting down, the adventures will continue. You can use the “Explore” section on Google Maps for Android and iOS to find interesting things to do around you, or Field Trip to uncover hidden or unique things in your city, among others.

All your schemes are available for download until February 7, 2014, after which all data will be permanently deleted. Follow these simple steps: https://support.google.com/schemer/answer/4427755

In the meantime, stay curious, ambitious, daring, and above all, stay adventurous; thank you for all your support on this journey!

-The Schemer Team”

If you need to download your Schemer info, head over to schemer.com, sign into your Google+ account and select the “Email me my schemes” option near the top of the page. The message containing your schemes should arrive in about 24 hours.

Are you a Schemer? Sad to see the app go? Let us know in the comments!

Unlock your Mac with Touch ID jailbreak tweak BioUnlock

BioUnlock concept

An upcoming jailbreak tweak will allow you to unlock your Mac using Touch ID. French developer Eric Castro is creating a tweak called BioUnlock. This is obviously only available for idevices with Touch ID support. There are some really cool tweaks using Touch ID and BioUnlock seems to be a sweet tweak everyone can look forward to using.

BioUnlock works pretty cool. Castro in the video setup his phone to unlock his Mac using his index finger and if he wants to simply unlock his phone he has it programmed to unlock using his thumb.

Here are a few words from the developers Reddit post:

“The basic TouchID->mac unlocking functionalities are done, I need to polish a lot of code I currently "dislike", and create a simple pairing tool and configuration user interface both for the Mac and another for the tweak that runs in your iPhone.

I am hoping to get it released before the end of january, but it's not sure as I still have other stuff that needs to get iOS7 support first.

Windows support is planned but not for this release.”

This is a nifty tweak I am sure many people will want to use once it is released. Personally, I really like mods, apps and hack that help in my daily routine. Sometimes tweaks like this can become very useful or at least something to show at least. What do you think about this new teak about to come out? Will you use it?

iPhone sales looking good so far thanks to the holidays

The official holiday quarterly report does not publish until January 27th, but research firm NPD put together an interesting poll giving us an indicator of how sales are looking since the holidays. With two new iPhones released just before the holiday shopping season, sales helped Apple gain some ground versus the competition. Take a look at the stats below from the survey.

This year Apple improved to 45% of smartphone owners own an iPhone from last years 35%. That’s an impressive jump!

NPD’s poll surveyed 5,000 smartphone owners and discovered that other manufactures are losing ground, who include LG, HTC, Motorola and Blackberry. However, Sammy is still sticking around pushing their percentage from 22% in Q4 2012 to 26% in Q4 2013.

Overall, Apple and Samsung combine for two-thirds of the smartphone ownership.

Globally Apple is not top dog when it comes to smartphone ownership, largely due to the fact Android is made much more available to many markets. But that all might change when Apple launches tomorrow with the largest network in the world, China Mobile. China Mobile has raked in over 1.2 million preorders for the China Mobile iPhone. The carrier giant has 760 million subscriber and good chance these customers are itching to get their hands on a new iPhone!

It’s good to know Apple is doing well and things are looking up. With all that said, are you an iPhone user or do you own another brand of smartphone?

For all of you Simpsons fans out there, you’ll be happy to hear that an app will be coming to iOS, which will allow you to stream all 25 seasons of the show to your device. FX Network CEO John Landgraf announced the good news yesterday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

The Simpsons content will be offered in a standalone app, where every single episode will be available for streaming at any time. It was made clear that all episodes would be available at all times, rather than offering only a few episodes at a time.

Unfortunately, the content will likely only be available to subscribers to cable providers that currently have a deal with FXNOW. Quartz reports:

“And right now, FXNOW only has deals with about 50% of television providers nationally, including AT&T U-verse, Cablevision, and Comcast. While Landgraf said additional agreements will be made this year, he was unable to estimate what percentage of subscribers will be covered by August.”

The Simpsons app is expected to launch some time in August and will likely be a US-only app for some time.

Get 50GBs worth of storage with Box app for iOS

Formally known as Box.net, now Box app for iOS, updated today and with their new revamp of an app they are rewarding users who download the app within the next 30 days with 50 GBs of cloud storage.

Prior to the update Box offered 10 GBs of online storage, which that was nice of them already. This is a huge jump in space and I can imagine the other guys are rethinking what they offer. Google Drive and Dropbox do offer some generous space as it is, but in my opinion you can’t have too much online cloud storage. I think I have roughly over 200 GBs of online storage tallied up.

Along with the increase of space for users, the app has made some performance enhancements as well. Photos upload faster, there is a new design and everything within the app is searchable.

As of now this offer only applies to iOS users and the Android version should get the same promo when it hits the Google Play Store. More than likely if you have accepted a promo of extra storage space this might not work for you, but it is worth a shot because the promo is lifetime.

Go get you some more GBs to pile on those uploads. Are you gonna take advantage of this awesome deal? It’s free, why not?

Google Play TV & Movies now available in the App Store

iPhone Screenshot 5

Today Google released a new app to the App Store making their TV and Movies available to iOS devices. This pretty much finishes off the media content Google provides. Google has already pushed out Google Books, Music and other various apps you can find on Android and web apps. Now you can access tv shows and movies Google provides.

This new edition might now appeal to the Apple only users, but surely is a welcomed addition to the Google apps family for those who use both Android and iOS. Google essentially has made all their stuff available cross-platform at this point. Google is really great about promotions, freebies and more with their media clients and now iOS users can get in on the fun.

Check out the app’s description:

Google Play Movies & TV allows you to watch movies and TV shows purchased on Google Play.

Watch your favorite movies and shows instantly on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from wherever you are. Buy or rent movies by visiting Google Play Store on any computer and watch them from any device over Wi-Fi using the Google Play Movies & TV app.

* Streaming video currently works over Wi-Fi connections only.

* TV shows are currently available in the United States, Japan, and United Kingdom.

This is a sweet deal Google is doing and I really appreciate the effort Google is doing to make all their content available on both iOS and Android. If you’re like me I bounce between many devices and it is very convenient to have all my media available to me no matter what platform I am using. I love the direction Google is going with decisions like this.

What do you think? Does it matter to you and do you appreciate Google releasing their apps to both platforms?

Saurik updates Substrate Safe Mode with support for iOS 7 and ARM64

substrate safe mode

Not much later after the new mobile Substrate for iOS 7, Saurik released an update for the Substrate Safe Mode allowing it to be compatible with newer firmware and A7 devices such as the iPhone 5s and iPad Air.

Here is the description of the update from the source itself in Cydia…

“Safe mode is a feature of MobileSubstrate that prevents your device from entering a permanent crash cycle by giving you a chance to uninstall malfunctioning extensions without a complete device restore.”

Basically what Safe Mode does, if you’re not familiar, is it prevents the device from going into an unstoppable crash cycle or bootloop and gives a chance to correct any issues. This allows you to restore the device without causing permanent damage.

According to iDownloadblog Saurik said, “As of version 0.9.4000 this package is even safer on iOS 7 (and on ARM64).”

Whether or not you have had any issues, it is recommended to update to the new Substrate Safe Mode. To do so head open Cydia, select Changes, Refresh and select the update option for Safe Mode.

Happy modding!

Tim Cook makes a TV appearance talking about the new Apple-China Mobile deal

Wednesday Tim Cook sat down with Xi Guohua, chairman of the largest wireless provider in China to help hype up the buzz about the new Apple-China mobile deal recently made.

Both big wigs Tim and Xi sat down with CNBC to discuss the future of Apple in the Chinese market. China Mobile’s chairman revealed that the carrier scored 1.2 million total pre-orders for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c as of January 13th and iPhones are launching this Friday.

In the interview Cook expressed how impressed he has been with China Mobile’s network and how fast it is. Tim also made sure to let everyone know he has “deep respect” for the carrier.

"We see this as bringing the world's best smartphone to the very largest and now the fastest network in China," Cook told CNBC.

China Mobile will release the iPhones on Friday. The iPhone 5s 16GB model is priced at 5,288 yuan ($874), the iPhone 5s 64GB model priced at 6,888 yuan ($1,139) and the iPhone 5c 16GB model priced at 4,488 yuan ($742).

This is a huge deal between Apple and China Mobile. China Mobile is the largest carrier in the world with a whopping 760 million subscribers. Apple was able to reap in some good numbers in Great China with iPhone sales and this new phase should definitely boost the momentum going forward. Other carriers in China have already begun to make sales strategies in order to compete with the upcoming China Mobile deal by cutting contract pricing. Talk about snuffing out small guy!

Moment professional lenses for your iPhone and iPad

Moment’s smartphone lenses bring the professional photography experience to iPhones, iPads, and Galaxies

Kickstarters are becoming quite the means of getting new products out to the public and here we have another one for you. Introducing Moment. Moment is making professional lenses for iPhones and iPads (and those other guys) that turn your smartphone cameras into professional snapshots.

2013 was a good year for the smartphone camera and 2014 looks even more promising for more innovations for upcoming devices. But something that is cool about Moment is that their product will improve whatever it is attached to, which is awesome if you think about it. Let’s say you can’t get a new device when it comes out but you want to still take amazing photos with your smartphone camera, you can simply use lenses like what Moment is making.

Not to mention not everyone can afford those professional grade DSLR cameras. Moment wants to bridge the gap between your smartphone and that fancy DSLR. Today Moment announced a $100 set of lenses, including 18mm Moment Wide and 70mm Moment Tele. The first wave of lenses are set to be shipped by June!

“Moment cofounder Marc Barros told VentureBeat that there are a few things that set Moment’s lenses apart. Besides being made with the same quality engineering as cinematic lenses, for example, Barros says that Moment’s lenses take photos free of distortion and chromatic weirdness. They’re also designed to work with or without cases.” – VentureBeat

Here are some examples of shots taken with Moment lenses

Personally, I hope Moment does well and the lenses set a new standard of smartphone photography. I love to use my phone for taking pics and would consider using a quality lens like Moment lenses to help take my photography to a new level.

Are you interested in smartphone lenses? Not a idevice user? Well, you’re in luck. Moment is developing their product for not only Apple devices, but Galaxy phones as well.

Amazing iPhone Air concept design [video & gallery]

3

As more concepts, designs and models come out for desired makes of the next iPhone the more we can see how much people want a sleek slim edge-to-edge display. Artist Federico Ciccarese of SET Solution has created one of the finest pieces of tech art I have ever seen! Take a gander at the gallery below and let us know what you think!

Apple for the most part is pretty predictable with their designs of devices. Usually, the designs are close to the predecessor of whatever device to date. For example, the iPads recently have not changed the overall look, but has tweaked bezels and screen sizes. If Apple were to continue such a trend, they could indeed make an iPhone Air to partner up with it’s big brother the iPad Air. Why not?

5

Measuring at a mere 1.5mm thick, weighing in at 70grams and stretching to 5” of retina beautification, this iPhone Air really is such a sweet design that strikes any techies eyes as a masterpiece of art.

Realistically…as of current components have no chance of fitting inside such a slim iPhone as this model portrays. But dream with me for a minute. If a design like this were to actually be released in the near future, then this would be ahead of the game. Thus the components would more than likely evolve as well. Such as how the iPhone Air could charge, because there would be no room for even the small lightening connector. The charger could be like what MacBooks magnetic charger has been like or even wireless charging.

6

While the edge-to-edge looks very appealing, the practical side of it does fall short in my opinion. I can imagine there would be many accidental touches from the palm and fingers that most people would have a hard time adjusting to the operation of an edge-to-edge display. Nice to look at, hard to deal with.

2

These depictions of what an iPhone Air could look like really does make one wonder what possibilities there are with the next iPhone. These renders are phenomenal. What are you thoughts on Federico Ciccarese’s design?

Snapchat says I’m sorry (again)

Over the weekend there was in increase of spam with the ever-so growing popular messaging app. Due to the more unwanted spam Snapchat has released a statement about this weekends activities.

“We’ve heard some complaints over the weekend about an increase in Snap Spam on our service. We want to apologize for any unwanted Snaps and let you know our team is working on resolving the issue. As far as we know, this is unrelated to the Find Friends issue we experienced over the holidays.

While we expect to minimize spam, it is the consequence of a quickly growing service. To help prevent spam from entering your feed, you can adjust your settings to determine who can send you Snaps. We recommend “Only My Friends” :)

We appreciate your patience and we’ll keep you posted.

Love,

Team Snapchat”

While the spam is annoying, it is nice to see companies apologize for when something goes wrong, not too mention to make a genuine statement and not simply tickle the user’s ears. I can only imagine the spam must be extremely aggravating on Snapchat’s end.

Fortunately, the spam is not related to the security breach, which was experience not so long ago that made 4.6 million user names and phone numbers visible on the web (well according to Snapchat to say the least). Last April Snapchat promised to fix spam issues.

Doing the math, putting the coincidence that 4.6 million user names and phone numbers being posted on the web with the increase of spam, could actually mean someone may have very well gotten a hold of people’s info and is now posting spam. Not pointing fingers here, but it is something to consider. Hopefully, that is not the case and both issues get snuffed out.

If you’re still a Snapchat user it is recommended to keep the app updated with the latest version and to set your privacy to only friends.

Have you been affected by the increase of spam messages and do you buy Snapchat’s apology?

evasi0n7 1.0.4 includes security update for the Retina iPad mini

evasi0n7 1.0.4 jailbreak

evasi0n7 1.0.3 was released but soon after another update was needed for the Retina iPad mini. The new fix is a security update for the untethered jailbreak tool. This is an important update so be sure to update to the new version ASAP.

The problem Team evad3rs were trying to fix was a bootloop issue with the Retina iPad mini. Unfortunately, version 1.0.3 still caused problems and now the 1.0.4 should fix the problems the new iPad mini was facing.

If you are currently jailbroken using evasi0n7 tool, simply update in Cydia. The update will show up as “evasi0n7 7.x Untether” when refreshed in Cydia.

Was your Retina iPad mini having bootloop issues? If so let us know if the fix helped or not in the comments.

More Gorgeous iWatch Concepts Emerge [Images]

Apple has been rumored to be working on “wearable technologies” for years now, but we have yet to see anything from the Cupertino company. While its competitors have jumped at the chance to make smartwatches (no matter how unimpressive the Galaxy Gear is), Apple has just sat back and focused on other projects.

Does Apple have anything in store for us or is the iWatch just wishful thinking? We don’t know for sure yet, but we do know that concept designers like Martin Hajek have come up with gorgeous mockups for the rumored gadget. Head inside for more info on his iWatch[S] and iWatch[C] models:

Nobody knows what the iWatch will look like, not even the infamous Sonny Dickson has leaked any parts yet everyone knows about the production problems which Apple purportedly is facing. All I do know for sure is that I had little problems visualizing the iWatch[C] and iWatch[S] on a wrist.”

What do you think? Would you rock an iWatch if it looked like this?

iPhone 6 to Keep 8MP Camera, Offer Optical Image Stabilization Instead

Only months after the release of the latest iPhone 5s, rumors of the next generation iPhone are already starting to float around in the blogosphere. The latest rumor comes from a Chinese report, claiming that the iPhone 6 will keep the current 8-megapixel sensor for its rear camera, but bring new enhancements such as optical image stabilization.

The China Post reports (via MacRumors):

“According to Nomura Securities, Largan’s recently lagging performance in the market is caused by rumors that Apple may adopt an 8 mega-pixel (MP) camera with improved optical image stabilization on its upcoming handset, instead of the 16 MP upgrade anticipated by industry observers. Apple’s decision is based on the design requirement to retain the handset’s more portable form factor, said Nomura Securities. [...]

Largan retains a leading edge among competing suppliers, as even though the camera’s pixel count remains the same, the company is among the few companies capable of coping with the complexity of the camera module, said Nomura Securities. The production of smaller-factored camera modules would require significantly improved optical aperture and resolution attributes, which are the company’s competitive strengths, said Nomura Securities.”

Apple has used an 8-megapixel sensor for the last couple of iPhone models, starting with the iPhone 4S. However, although the iPhone 4S, 5, and 5s all have the same size camera sensor, they are far from the same when it comes to performance. Apple has used several hardware and software enhancements in the latest iPhone 5s that make it one of the best cameras you can find a smartphone today.

Comparison via of Phone Arena

Of course, we would definitely like to see Apple use cameras in the 12-16 megapixel ranges, as many of the high-end Android phones currently have. However, the higher megapixel count doesn’t necessarily equal better photos. In fact, the iPhone 5s camera can outperform many of its competitors with sensors around the 13-megapixel range.

Nonetheless, we’re still months away from the iPhone 6 and many things can change from now until then. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more info. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

‘Fav’ is a new app launcher tweak, use a gesture to open your favorite app from the Home screen

There aren't many iOS 7 ready app launchers in Cydia yet. There is Swipey, which lets you launch multiple apps from the Lock screen, but it costs a couple bucks. If you only care about one app very much, and aren't so concerned with a feature that will have you enter your passcode regardless then Fav will do just fine for you. It's available in Cydia's default repos, free of charge. Check out the rest of the article for a short video from a YouTuber and a few more details.

So Fav Is as simple as simple comes, to prepare the application you simply go into your stock Settings app, scroll down to Fav, and choose your 'fav' stock or third-party application to quick launch from the Home screen via a gesture. Swiping right will reveal a red bar with a heart on it, but it will only open the application you chose when you have swiped far enough to the right. This is to prevent accidental opening of applications.

So let us know in the comments below if you plan on installing Fav, and why? How will you justify a gesture when you're only a tap away from launching the app as is.

A new page, iPhone5recall.com, has emerged to put an end to the many of us with broken power buttons

A petition is floating around the web right now in regards to the iPhone power button defect. The issue has been mumbled about in forums since the iPhone 4 was released, seeing as the iPhone 4s, 5, and 5s all use the same button the issue has occured openly on all handsets. I'm not sure if the iPhone 5s has fallen victim to the issue as of yet. Maybe some users can let us know in the comments below. Either way, the real story here is the iPhone5recall.com site. Check out the next page for more information.

The most entertaining part of this whole debacle is I am one of the many people affected by this defect. My power button started going out on me a couple months ago, and has been getting progressively worse over time. I now have to press it really hard about 2 to 3 times before I get any reaction, in most cases when it does work the screen silently goes off, no lock sound at all. The issue has to do with a faulty cable buried deep within the iPhones. I know because I looked into the iFixIt.com repair tutorials and considered starting it as a DIY project.

Check out the video below for lessons on how to repair the item yourself, but please do sign the petition yourself.

Thankfully the iOS 7 jailbreak saved me from a headache, now I just use Ryan Petrichs Activator tweak to lock my screen with a triple-tap of the Home button. By the way, Activator is iOS 7 ready and available in Cydia for free.

Check out the petition by following this link.

Apple acquires SnappyLabs, creator of third-party app that shoots pics faster than stock camera

snappycam-features

TechCrunch reports that Apple has swallowed up SnappyLabs, the company that created SnappyCam, a number one paid app in nine countires. The $1 app offers a burst mode that even outperforms the stock burst mode of the iOS 7 camera app. At 20 to 30 frames per second SnappyCam is no joke when it comes to photo applications for iOS. Nothing even comes close to its feature set. Most impressively, the application was designed by a one man team.

"SnappyCam, on iPhone, is the fastest smart-phone camera on earth. With it you can easily get that impossible, perfect shot, every time. SnappyCam also shoots unique living photos that capture the entire moment, not just a single snapshot in time. It’s like an interactive flip-book, in full 8 Mpx glory and at high-speed." - App Store description

SnappyCam dissapeared from the App Store as of recently and the SnappyLabs websites were taken down. These were the first two hints of the acquisition. Apparently there were additional companies interested in the purchase of the company, and its technology, described only as 'most of the usual players.'

John Papandriopoulos

The image above is of SnappyLabs founder and only developer, John Papandriopoulos. (What a name eh?)

Apple hasn't confirmed the purchase yet but TechCrunch is usually very reliable as a source.

Apple has purchased a bunch of companies as of recently, BroadMap mapping firm, Catch (Evernote competitor), and PrimeSense; the company behind the original Microsoft Kinect technology.

CCClockOpenToAlarm routes Timer shortcut to Alarm setting in Clock app

You know the Control Center shortcut app launchers? The one with the incredible useful features like a flashlight, a calculator, the camera app, and the most important of all.. wait, no it's just the Timer feature of the Clock app. So if and when a user hits this shortcut they are more often than not just scrolling over to the Alarm portion of the Clock app. Well a new jailbreak tweak called CCClockOpenToAlarm fixes this problem for many of us, not timing things.

The jailbreak for iOS 7 came out only weeks ago, but it seems that many developers were ready and waiting with tweaks at hand. I'm a huge fan of subtle improvements such as this tweak over full user interface modifications.

There are no settings for this tweak, thankfully, and it just starts working as advertised after installing. It's in the default Cydia repos so go ahead and search for it now.

Another option for changing your Control Center shortcuts that I've started using recently is called CCToggles it allows you to fully customize the toggles as well as app shortcuts. CCToggles is also available through Cydia's default repos.

WalMart selling iPhone 5s for $127, iPhone 5c for cost of steak dinner

Walmart , a company known for rocking-the-boat, has given us an irresistible offer on the iPhone 5c ($27) and iPhone 5s ($127) with a two-year contract from AT&T or Verizon this coming Friday. As others have mentioned, Black Friday is over – the best deals on mobiles has come and gone. Though, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wal-Mart just starts regularly offering the iPhone at a price point similar to this weekend’s deal.

It wouldn’t be hard for Walmart to afford to undercut it’s competition, why would you activate an iPhone anywhere else but Wallyworld if you could get the same device for less; plus buy some socks, shampoo, and a pork roast.

The LA Times broke the story for us today, check out Salvador Rodriguez’s quote from their story:

‘As part of a holiday sale starting Friday, Wal-Mart plans to offer the iPhone 5c for $27 with a two-year contract from AT&T or Verizon. That’s a huge discount on the iPhone 5c, a $99 model that Apple introduced just three months ago.

The iPhone 5c has struggled to sell and Wal-Mart has been discounting it since it was released in September. Friday’s sale price won’t be as good at what Wal-Mart offered on Black Friday — $45 for an iPhone 5c with a $75 gift card thrown in — but you’ll be hard pressed to find the iPhone 5c for cheaper than $27.”

Instagram 5 adds ‘Instagram Direct’ feature

Instagram 5.0 feature, ‘Instagram Direct’, was announced and released today at their media event, ‘Share a Moment’, in New York. The idea is simple, you can now directly send images and video to select users, rather than only being able to share to everyone at once.

Twitter just announced direct image sharing in their ‘Direct Message’ feature. I can’t help but think that Instagram is shortly becoming a Twitter-esque app without link sharing. The more features Instagram adds the more of its original charm it loses.

Remember when Instagram wasn’t owned by Facebook, and was simply a photo sharing network? Not to say I don’t like Instagram, but I do find myself uninstalling and reinstalling the app throughout the year.

I firmly believe Twitter is the most practical social network, as in it’s the most well rounded. What’s your crutch social network? Is it Instagram? I absolutely depend on Twitter and Facebook still, I could go without everything else for the most part. Let us know in the comments below; check out the release notes below as well.

Release notes:

Introducing Instagram Direct!

We’re excited to introduce Instagram Direct, a new way to send photo and video messages to your friends.

Now you’ll see a new icon in the top right corner of your home feed. Tap it to see photos and videos that people have sent directly to you.

To send your own photos or videos, choose Direct instead of Followers once you’ve edited your post. When you’re done editing, just choose the people you want to share with.

Today’s update also includes bug fixes and performance improvements

Fleksy alternative keyboard SDK available for iOS developers

Fleksy is an awesome keyboard that's about to land in select applications; by 'select' I mean developers have the option of adding it to their Apps for free, with the permission of Fleksy's developers.

Now I adore the stock iOS keyboard for it's consistency amongst applications, and its consistently predictable auto-correct features, but show me a modern human being who isn't interested in a gesture-friendly alternative keyboard for their iPhone or iPad.

San Francisco based Fleksy has been in the App Store for a year and a half according to reports, I didn’t know about it. They have done the obvious thing, by providing a software development kit (SDK) to registered Apple iOS developers.

Fleksy, in an interview with The Verge, bragged that its keyboard integration is “deeper than it’s ever been integrated”. You can check out their app for free right now here. I installed the app immediately after reading about it, and it works very well. The animations are smooth, amongst an iOS 7 friendly user-interface, to imagine this implemented in all of my favorite apps is exciting. But where I’d really like to use it is in stock applications. I doubt this will happen before a jailbreak for iOS 7.

“Verdelis says he’s leaving it up to others to determine whether they want to offer Fleksy as a free add-on, or as a paid upgrade through in-app purchase. That could mean a user pays over and over again in multiple apps to get access to the system they’re used to.” – The Verge

Some of the apps already prepared for Fleksy integration are GV Connect, Blindsquare, Wordbox, and Launch Center Pro

Pegatron has lost five young employees, one a 15 year old child

Over the last year Pegatron has failed to explain the deaths of  five younger employees, one that was found out to be only 15 years old. The 15 year old was using a fake ID that said he was 20. China Labor Watch was the first to report on this, check out the Sydney Morning Herald’s comment on the next page.

“Pegatron, the Taiwanese manufacturer that employed him, said the workplace environment at the Shanghai plant was not the cause of his illness. But a spokeswoman acknowledged that several other young workers at the factory had also died in the past few months [...]

“Considering the sudden deaths of five people and the similar reason of the deaths, we believe there should be some relations between the tragedy and the working conditions in the factory,” said Li Qiang, who runs China Labor Watch … “

According to statements from the family of the 15 year old boy, he worked 12 hour days, six days a week. He died of pneumonia in October. I’m not sure who should be the most ashamed, Apple, Pegatron, or the boys family for not taking care of their incredibly sick 15 year old child, after allowing him to work in factory with poor working conditions. And don’t think I’m blaming the victim here, the victim has passed away, I’m asking for accountability.

Pegatron’s contract with Apple states that its employees may work a maximum of 60 hours weekly on Apple products, according to internal reports from Pegatron the average employee works 46 hours a week for their Apple contracts.

Angry Birds GO! is a nice looking racing game from Rovio

Angry Birds has proven to be one of the most popular games ever created.  It’s accessible from a variety of sources, and has come out with countless versions.  For the first time since its original debut, it has done something new. Angry Birds GO! is their newest title, leaving the flick style gameplay of the old versions behind. Their new game is reminiscent of Mario Kart 64 and I couldn’t be more excited.

Angry Birds GO! features all of the regular expectations of a highly animated racing game, with power-ups, vehicle upgrades, and unlockable characters. It has multiple game modes; Race, Time Boom, Fruit Splat, Champion Chase, and Mega Match. And it’s available free in the App Store.

The only thing I was sort of bummed out about was that their wasn’t a ‘live’ multiplayer option mentioned in the release notes. I would love to be able to race friends in real-time with Game Center integration. Hopefully this comes about in due-time.

Check out video footage of the new game here, and download it for free from the app store here.

What’s your favorite time killing game? Let us know in the comments below. Happy December!

Spotify goes free with ads for iOS & Android tablets

Spotify announced this morning that it would allow its free streaming option to all iOS and Android tablets. Previously Spotify only allowed this feature on its desktop application, allowing users to select songs and create playlists free of charge in exchange for involuntarily listening to advertisements. The biggest question I have now, is how do I trick the Spotify application into thinking my phone is a tablet.

Spotify is very cool if you like browsing through music versus being at the mercy of streaming radio algorithms. If you haven’t installed the desktop application yet I highly recommend you do so tonight, now that there is a tablet version of free streaming, that only leaves the smartphone apps with the Premium membership option.

This plan of action will work well for Spotify, they know that people rarely use tablets and laptops on the go as a music player; it’s just impractical if not slightly goofy looking. I mean, really try and imagine a person holding a tablet or laptop in public for the sole purpose of listening to music. I wouldn’t do it, maybe if I needed to do some work, or schoolwork, I would multi-task using my laptop and Spotify.

What Spotify knows is the largest portion of their Premium subscribers comes from users of their smartphone applications, so give it to everyone for free everywhere else. This will cause more dependency/desire to use Spotify premium from your smartphone when you’re away from your other gadgets. In turn creating more potential Spotify Premium users.

Chromcast now supports Plex for iOS local video playback

Google has added some much needed application support to the Chromecast, most notably Plex for iOS support. Other services added were Vevo, Songza, Red Bull TV, Post TV, Viki, RealPlayer Cloud, and apparently more.

The Chromecast came out recently and has proved to be very popular, at $35 dollars or less it’s the most affordable and elegantly delivered streaming media box experience I know of. While it’s not the most friendly device for people looking for effortless display mirroring, it’s perfect for catching up on YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu Plus.

With Plex support now available users will be able to play content stored locally on your iOS device.

Earlier I mentioned the video mirroring isn’t on par with high price boxes like the Apple TV or Samsung’s AllShare Cast Wireless Hub . But at a fraction of the price you’re receiving the majority of the functionality of the Chromecast’s more experienced and expensive competition.

What set top streaming devices do you use? I use an Xbox 360 and a Chromecast for different televisions. Also I run Plex on my MacBook Air. Currently the only way for me to send local Mac videos to my Chromecast is by hitting Cmd-O within a new tab of Chrome to open a locally stored media file within the Chrome browsers built-in media player.

iPhone 5s immediately available in all locations, unlocked GSM model still 1-3 days

The iPhone 5s has been hard to come by since its release, especially the gold model.  As of last week Apple retail stores claimed full inventory of iPhone 5S models.  Following suit, the Apple Store online version has also updated its shipping availability.

Anyone who orders off-line will be happy to see the shipping times have been reduced to within 24 hours of ordering. Good timing since Christmas is right around the corner.   And don’t forget this Christmas and you’re holding a brand-new iPhone that hundreds of very unhappy employees helped make that happen for you.

So go online or to any Apple retail location to get your iPhone 5s fix, I’m still rocking my trusty slate iPhone 5. My power button is about 80% broken but it still gets the job done.  I’ve been considering an inexpensive off-contract upgrade, what do you guys think should I move to an iPhone 5c or a Moto-X? Both of those handsets go for about $300 used on swappa.com.

Qualcomm’s Gimbal to compete with its customer Apple’s iBeacon for Bluetooth coupon dominance

Qualcomm is the parts supplier for Apple’s own ‘indoor positioning system’ iBeacon. As of recently QUALCOMM designed their own version, called Gimbal, and is selling devices in two different sizes.  A five-dollar model, and a ten-dollar model; the only blatant difference between the two devices is battery life.

I’m just now learning about iBeacons today, I’ve seen the word in headlines for articles and never really cared to learn more about advertising related technologies. It seems silly that Qualcomm had been designing these for Apple for a while before realizing they should probably start selling them directly to the consumer.

The iBeacon and Gimbal units are small Bluetooth 4.0 transmitters that throw notifications at your most personal screen, your smartphone. Say you’re in a shoe store with Gimbal or iBeacon units, you should expect to receive a coupon for shoes on your phone.

Qualcomm’s subsidiary ‘Qualcomm Retail Solutions,’ is the company responsible for deciding to compete with itself. What I mean by that is Apple buys the parts for the iBeacon from Qualcomm. So this is a ‘win-win’ for Qualcomm, but it may be bad for the future of Apple’s iBeacon.

Check out this Gimbal demo video from Qualcomm, found on YouTube.  There are some cool ideas presented here, though it seems like a future of potentially constant notifications. According to others who have used iBeacon already, it’s buggy still.

What do you think about iBeacon and Gimbal? Let us know in the comments below!

Wake up by your favorite Pandora station

If you’re not familiar with Pandora by now, you must have been sleeping under a rock for a long, long time. They have been one of the leading streaming radio station services, which cater to your style of music. The service is always improving and one of the new features now available to Pandora users is the ability to wake by the your favorite Pandora station with the alarm.

The iOS app recently went under an iOS 7-style makeover to help the listening experience smoother and easier. So now that the looks are out of the way, they are focusing on what is on the inside; that’s what counts, right?

The alarm option is has been a highly requested feature for Pandora and it is finally here. A neat feature is for this alarm is when the alarm goes off you can select to keep the music playing or snooze.

You will need an iDevice running iOS 5 or higher and sadly, need a paid subscription for the new feature. However, the app is still free.

iOS 7 adoption rate up to 74.1 percent and rising

iOS version distribution

You know what the coolest part of iOS is? It's the lack of fragmentation between handsets, it's the fact that any app I have on my iPhone will likely run on my friends iPhone. I remember having an Android back in the day, and everything was a project on those things. I had to jump through hoops to get it to behave like an iPhone, I know things have changed a lot over the last three years. And there are tons of great Androids to choose from now, I might get in on the Moto X or Nexus 5. Those are easily the two best Android handsets, debate with me about it in the comments below if you disagree, but the two aformentinoed phones are the closest thing Android has to iPhone quality and consistency. For those that don't know, Motorola is owned by Google, and the Nexus line of Android phones always runs the most current version of Android, much like iPhones always get pushed updates.

Android version distribution\

Why don't Android manufacturers want their users to run the newest version of Android?! Who knows, if I was a handset maker I would advertise OTA newest versions, and be the only firm competing with Google directly for that niche market of Android users who want to run the newest version, which at this point is KitKat 4.4. KitKat looks great and I'm running it on my Nexus 7 2013 as we speak.

So the deal still is that iOS is becoming less fragmented, and Android sadly enough is still pretty much the same off, I wouldn't say it has gotten better or worse in the department. At least the majority of people are finally running JellyBean, I remember only a couple years ago these graphs were displaying a majority of users were still on 2.3 Gingerbread. le sigh.

40 percent of iPad sold were to Android users this Black Friday

Android might be in more hands worldwide than any other smart device OS, but that hasn't stopped an impressive 40 percent of iPads sold this Black Firday to Android users. The analytics company behind the study was InfoScout, who obtained data from 90,000 receipts from Black Friday shoppers. The simple issue is that people know for a fact that an iPad is going to be a safe purchase, where as there is a sea of crappy alternative tablets to choose from, there are gems amongst the crowd though check out the next page for my suggestions.

Everyone should know this, if you want the best 'bang-for-your-buck' Android tablet you go with, in this order, the Asus Nexus 7, Samsung product, or Kindle Fire HDX. If you want a good value Windows tablet, you go with a Dell Venue Tablet. I work in an electronics store, you can read your stats online all day - but I have hands on access to these goods.

There are just way more tablet optimized applications for iOS. Android did just open a section of the Play Store dedicated to tablet applications, so we should see a gradual increase in tablet dedicated Android applications. It's funny to me that a bunch of Android users were buying iPads, I'm the exact opposite case. I have a Mac and an iPhone, but I went with a Nexus 7 tablet and couldn't be happier. There isn't another tablet out there id rather have, and I've literally used every tablet in Best Buy. Did I mention I work in Best Buy stores as a Google Specialist? Cause I do.

Apple Retail loosening price match policies by ten percent

Select Apple Stores have begun to lift their incredibly strict pricing policies. Up until recently it was unheard of to be able to request a price match in Apple retail locations. But according to new reports, specific Apple stores can offer ‘special prices’ of up to ten percent off of specific items. Due to the supply of iPad mini Retina and iPhone 5s handsets being low, the discounts only apply to items in plenty, such as the iPhone 5c.

WalMart is offering the iPad Air for $20 dollars off, and apparently it’s fair game according to Apple retail centers new policy, same goes for the iPhone 5c.  Apple stores have historically been able to only price match odds and ends, consisting of mostly accessories.

Even with the price match policy loosening up at Apple retail locations, better deals can still be found elsewhere. Let us know what ya think in the comments below, thanks for reading!

Bartender is a handy Mac utility that keeps your Menu Bar clean

Bartender is an awesome Mac utility that I was turned on to by Jeff Benjamin over at iDB, so lets all give Jeff the credit he deserves. Either way I liked it so much I wanted to let our readers in on this wicked slick tool. In the image above you see the preference panel for Bartender. Bartender’s main purpose is to allow you to clean up your menu bar. Keep reading for more details.

The above image is what my menu bar looks like before I activate Bartender, and the image below shows the after effect. You can see I’m running Flux and Sophos at the moment, but on busier nights for my Mac you’d see Plex media server and maybe Dropbox running up there as well.

Clicking the three little dots has pushed all of the items that were stored in my menu bar on the right hand side into a customizable drawer. If I click the Bartender button again it will expand all of the icons I instructed the utility to hide away. The only downfall to this awesomeness is that the trial version only lasts so long, (4 weeks actually) and then the license fee is $15! This may be a great utility but I’m a bit more comfortable paying about $5 or less for utilities. If you are interested in paying for Bartender, I can’t blame you it’s sweet, head over to the official site at this link.

iTunes gift cards available through PayPal

Hidden deep within the bowels of PayPal's site there is a section that sells iTunes gift cards, which seems silly to me, either way if you'd prefer to purchase an iTunes gift card from the most obscure location on the web check out this site. All cynicism aside, there are plenty of good reasons to buy your iTunes codes through PayPal's portal, lets check em out inside.

PayPal: "Beginning today, just in time for the holidays, PayPal will be opening the doors (or the URL) to the PayPal Digital Gifts store. What is PayPal Digital Gifts? It is a store that will give people the chance to purchase digital gift cards from a host of our partner merchants."

So why even consider this option when there are plenty of ways to share and buy iTunes credit already? I don't know to be honest, please give me a good reason in the comments.

As you probably read above, PayPal plans to offer gift cards from multiple partner merchants, so we won't see Google Play cards because Google Wallet is PayPal competition, and we won't see Amazon.com gift cards because PayPal is eBay friendly, and eBay and Amazon are direct competitors. And these are just personal predictions, just FYI, take my words lightly.

Let me know what you think in the comments below. What other merchants will PayPal add to their Digital Gifts Store? So far it's just iTunes cards, which is boring. Why would you chose this method over simply clicking the 'gift' buttons in the App Store or iTunes.?
