This Waterproof iPhone Case is so Thin You Can Use Another Case on Top of it

When you think of a waterproof smartphone case, you usually have this ugly bulky image in mind. However, an amazing new waterproof case from Japan named the Case Marine is only 0.25mm thick! It’s so thin that you can literally use it with another case on top of it!

The case can protect your iPhone from water down to an incredible depth of 32 feet. Furthermore, you can actually use the iPhone underwater with no issues. It is made of polyurethane with a clear acrylic panel that covers the iPhone’s entire display. Hit the jump to see a video of the case in action:

As you can see from the video above, the case only takes 5 seconds to install and you’re ready to go! It appears to only be available in Japan for the time being with the lite version running for $15. The premium version, which looks like it covers more of the iPhone’s back as well, costs $38. The folks behind the case also mention that there would be an iPad version coming soon for $50, letting you take your tablet in to showers or baths with you.

Aaron Sorkin Says Steve Jobs Film Won’t Be Another “Straight Biopic,” Steve Wozniak Hired as Tutor

Aaron Sorkin Says Steve Jobs Film Won’t Be Another “Straight Biopic,” Steve Wozniak Hired as Tutor

We reported earlier in the week that Academy Award-winning screenplay writer Aaron Sorkin had been chosen to write Sony’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic. In a recent news conference, Sorkin answers many of the questions we’ve all been wondering, and also announces some interesting news…

“It can’t be a straight ahead biography because it’s very difficult to shake the cradle-to-grave structure of a biography,” Sorkin said. “Drama is tension versus obstacle. Someone wants something, something is standing in their way of getting it. They want money, they want the girl, they want to get to Philadelphia – doesn’t matter… And I need to find that event and I will. I just don’t know what it is.”

Sorkin also announced that Sony Pictures has hired Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak as tutor for the film. He will advise the crew on the character of Jobs and also some technical aspects of computers. It’ll definitely be interesting to see which direction Sony takes the biopic.

It’s also important to note that this is a different film than the indie version that Ashton Kutcher will be acting in.

Bloomberg: Steve Jobs Closely Worked on the Design of the Upcoming 4-inch iPhone

As if there weren’t already enough rumors and reports about an upcoming 4-inch iPhone, Bloomberg has just added more fuel to the flames. According to Bloomberg’s latest report, the next iPhone will indeed have a larger screen and was actually closely worked on by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Apparently, the current 3.5-inch display will be replaced with a larger one and Jobs personally oversaw the new design of the upcoming phone:

“Apple, based in Cupertino, California, has placed orders from suppliers in Asia for screens that are bigger than the 3.5- inch size now on the smartphone, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October, one person said.

The design change will be Apple’s first for the iPhone since 2010, when it introduced the iPhone 4. Electronics makers, led by Samsung, are moving toward bigger screens, as consumers use handheld devices for a broader array of tasks, including watching video, playing games and browsing the Web.”

Both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters have confirmed the rumors the next iPhone having a larger screen. It’ll be interesting to see which direction Apple takes the iPhone’s design this October, as it is definitely in need of a refresh. I guess only time will tell. Stay tuned!

How a 4-inch iPhone May Benefit Apps [Gallery]

All of the recent rumors of the next iPhone packing a larger screen has definitely got the iOS community excited. The Wall Street Journal confirmed rumors yesterday and reported that Apple will indeed be using bigger screen of “at least 4 inches” on the next iPhone.

In the midst of all the speculation Niilo Autio from the Overdrive Design blog has just showed us mock ups of how a 4-inch display may actually benefit apps with the new 640 x 1152 resolution. The 4-inch mock up is set next to the current iPhone 4S model for comparison. Head inside to check the full gallery out:

Verizon Clarifies its Plans on Killing Unlimited Data Plans

Up until now Verizon has allowed its unlimited data users to keep their plans even though the carrier no longer offers them. However, CFO Fran Shammo announced yesterday that Verizon would be killing the grandfathered unlimited data plans this summer. And as you can expect, chaos ensued throughout the smartphone community…

People have been very upset with the announcement so the carrier has made a statement to clarify. The New York Times reports:

“Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.

When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.

Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.

The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.”

Still not the best news, but at least some people will be able to keep their plans. What do you think? Is Verizon making the right move or will this push customers away?

Next-Gen iPhone to Have a Display of ‘At Least 4 Inches’, Enters Production Next Month

Rumors always run wild when nearing an Apple release, but sometimes this can make it hard to know which rumors actually have some truth to them and which don’t. One prediction that we constantly hear about is the larger screen rumor. Everyone and their mothers have been talking about the next-generation iPhone having a 4-inch (or larger) display. But will the next iPhone actually pack a larger screen? According to the Wall Street Journal, it sure will…

In a new report, the WSJ claims that Apple is preparing to ditch the current 3.5-inch displays for screens that are “at least 4 inches diagnolly.” This is definitely great news for anyone who’s wanted a little bit of a bump in screen size. Although the iPhone’s screen has had tremendous growth over the past 5 years, the are still the same exact size as they were on the first model…

However, that’s all going to change with the next generation iPhone. “People familiar with the situation” are claiming that the Apple has actually already ordered screens that are “at least 4 inches” from its suppliers. The sources said that production for the new screens will being next month in June.

What do you think? Will Apple really go for bigger screens?

Sprint Won’t Profit from the iPhone Until 2015

Sprint Won’t Profit from the iPhone Until 2015

According to a new report from AllThingsD, it will take Sprint another three years before they see any profits from the iPhone. The agreement, which will cost Sprint around $15.5 billion within the next four years, has even forced CEO Dan Hesse to take a $3.25 million dollar pay cut. However, Hesse is very confident that it will all pay off and says, “We’re very happy with it.”

The Now Network will finally see some green from the beloved idevice in 2015. When asked if the iPhone move was a smart one, Hesse responds, “In the long term.” AllThingsD reports:

“We believe in the long term,” Hesse said. “And over time we will make more money on iPhone customers than we will on other customers.”

Sprint has had great numbers since the iPhone deal and seems to be on the right track. But only time will tell…

iPhone Tops the List on US Phone Satisfaction Index

iPhone Tops the List on US Phone Satisfaction Index

We are obviously hardcore iPhone enthusiasts here at iPD, but we try to look at things from an unbiased point of view. So, we’ll let the numbers speak for themselves this time…

According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, the iPhone is at the top of the list as the most satisfying smartphone in the country. Apple’s star product landed an impressive score of 83, while competitors HTC, LG and Nokia tied for second place with 75. The difference is quite a lot, but not as bad as the failing Blackberry maker RIM. The Canadian manufacturer landed in last place with a score of 69.

ASCI also compared mobile carriers but the results are not too shocking. As expected, smaller carriers blew the giants out of the water when it came to customer satisfaction. Head over to the source link for more details.

Sony Picks Up Aaron Sorkin to Write Script for Upcoming Steve Jobs Film

Other than the indie biopic starring Ashton Kutcher, there is another film currently under works about Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs. This version is by Sony and is looking pretty darn good so far. The studio just made a huge move, picking up Aaron Sorkin to write the script for the movie.

You may have heard Sorkin’s name, as he is the brilliant mind behind the Academy Award-winning movie, The Social Network. The Social Network is based on the beginning of Facebook and won ‘Best Adapted Screenplay.’ Now, Sorkin focuses on Steve Jobs’ story…

Sony announced:

“Steve Jobs’ story is unique: He was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time, but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.”

Sony also has the rights to the Steve Jobs biography Walter Isaacson. All it needs now is an actor to play the part. It obviously won’t be Ashton Kutcher, so who do you think it will be?

iOS Hacker i0n1c Gets Interviewed, Talks Jailbreak Community and More

If you’re a jailbreaker, you may have heard the name i0n1c around. I0n1c, or Stefan Esser, is an incredibly talented iOS hacker and is the man behind the untethered 4.3.x jailbreak. He recently also jailbroke the new iPad on iOS 5.1 and 5.1.1, but announced that he would not be releasing it to the public. He was also involved in a “tweet-argument” with legendary hacker pod2g recently about the release of iOS exploits and jailbreaks.

While he did receive a lot of criticism for his comments made on Twitter, it’s important to note that he has done a great deal for the jailbreak community. Italian blog iSpazio recently got the chance to sit down and talk to i0n1c about his passion for hacking, jailbreaking and much more. Head inside for the full interview:

How did you acquire this passion for technology and when you started to hack something?

I had my computer when I was about eight years and I broke up a week later as I was about tweaking some settings that I should not change. My parents did not want to lose time in games, so instead I learned to program and I was very interested in working on low-level things. But I think I was sixteen when I started to realize how many beautiful things can be achieved by modifying the code of other people. I think I could inserirmi earlier in the game, but I never had any kind of Internet access and / or e-mail up to seventeen / eighteen years’.

For most of our users, you’re famous thanks to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.3.X and recently the technique has not been issued to jailbreak iPhone OS 5.1 and 5.1.1: how to address the issue of security of IOS?

Addressing the safety of IOS is how to deal with any matter of safety, with the difference that is much more challenging the safety or PHP web application that was my previous field of research. The other difference is that hacking the iPhone and search for materials for the jailbreak gets you in touch with the actual consumer, directly benefiting your business and this is very different from other fields safely. Most of the time you’re dealing only with applications developers do not like to see problems in their code, or administrators who need to upgrade to the latest version of a piece of software. I assume that there are many fields in the internal security of the consumer actually ever heard the name or nickname of a person involved in finding vulnerabilities or exploits that have written the same. Having done both experiences, I would prefer a developer angry that a “jailbreaker” angry.

We heard that you release the jailbreak iPhone OS 5.1 and iPhone OS 5.1.1 because, for many users, jailbreak means piracy: is there a way to lock it?

Whatever you have heard about why I’m releasing the jailbreak is very probably wrong. The “jailbreak community” tends to take random tweet and spread rumors and conspiracy theories around these. For example, I get a huge number of requests via email or twitter every day from people willing to pay to get the jailbreak because they heard that I sell. I never said I’d sold my jailbreak, I have only discussed the fact that, while developers do all the work for free there are a lot ‘of people who collect a lot of money with every new jailbreak:

  • The programmers who create programs for Cydia;
  • The editors of the jailbreak guides and sites of IOS (including advertising);
  • Those who do pay to make a jailbreak (theoretically free), or use the public exploits for malicious purposes, or conduct studies of devices jailbrekkati and then sell the data in their analyzes and, ultimately, people who use the ‘ bootrom exploit to create expensive software for government agencies.
I may have forgotten others who earn the jailbreak, but I think he made the idea. The people in the “jailbreak community” does not seem to understand that from my point of view, to spend months of work to perfect a jailbreak and then release it for free is a waste of time. And of course they get upset when I say this because they fear that pod2g to persuade him to use his time to something more important.

Speaking of piracy. I’m pretty sure it would be possible to make a jailbreak which would block the most common ways to install pirated applications on devices. But there is no way to prevent the pirates to prevent them from doing the reverse of the jailbreak and change: it may take him a little ‘, because all the jailbreak iPhone OS require low-level code in the kernel that can do all the dirty tricks but eventually find the way. Maybe not fast enough until Apple does not close the vulnerabilities and “kill” actually jailbreak. The game would not be worth the candle. Why should someone like pod2g MuscleNerd or spend days or weeks to write code like that, knowing it would last only a few days.

If users do today jailbreak only for purposes related to piracy, do you think there are still some who do it to have complete control of your iPhone?

Obviously there are people who perform the jailbreak because they want total control of your iPhone, the need to install the latest tweak in Cydia and other reasons. But each of these groups have too much self-esteem of himself. The vast majority of people always have things to jailbrekkato pirated or for unlocking your phone: anyone who denies this claim is delusional. When you look at people jailbroken iPhone, you’ll see that many apps installed on your device, and Apple is lucky if they have paid for each program.

And yes, there is also a group of people who claim to download the applications and then buy them because there is no other way to try before you buy. Personally I think Apple could solve this legitimate request by offering users the opportunity to do so.

For me it does not matter because the jailbreak is done, has no influence in my decision not to lose months of work to let people do what they want.

The May 8 came out about your book on hacking IOS: why did you feel the need to write this text?

Well, every time a field is developed and collect as much material for a specific topic, at some point, the logical consequence is to write a book.Of course nowadays you can find lots of information on the internet but these are often scattered throughout the network and sometimes, the important facts have not yet been made public. So the idea of creating a book and collect all information at one point only allows someone new in this field to make their way more easily. So in the long term, this book will allow many people to get hacking IOS quickly. However, the iDevices are an easy target to attack and therefore require years of experience to “possess”.

The problem with the “jailbreak community” at this point is that they do not understand that, in the long run, this book could bring new people into the scene of the jailbreak and most people do not understand. They believe that Apple will help to stop the jailbreak or consider it an attempt to make money from this community. This type of response shows how little they understand what is going on: first of all, anyone who writes a book about a topic of technology will tell you the few gains made (especially not if there are six authors for a book) and the other false belief is that Apple uses a couple of silly elephants who work on the safety of IOS. In fact, people who work for Apple for safety in IOS are quite skilled and have better debugging tools that our community can never have.

The reason they do not close the loophole used by the jailbreak days after a reason is purely political in nature: it seems that Apple quickly closes the loopholes that jeopardize your safety. Other than that, keep these vulnerabilities open for a while ‘because each device sold, is a device sold.Looking at the “jailbreak community” can collect information about functions that customers might want, which in the long term could lead to an increase in their earnings. I do not think Apple is so worried about piracy because of jailbrekkati devices, because they know that there is a maximum of money you can squeeze out of a person.

What do you think about the iCommunity? Do you think that is populated with users from pirated or people who, for example, will often send threatening messages?

Pirates are everywhere and I’m not interested. If you lose sleep because of them, then good luck to your survival in this world.

I think the “jailbreak community” is suffering from something far worse: it is “contaminated” by leeches who do not consider other people’s work and the effort needed to create some things. Believe they have the right to take whatever you see, and if you do not get enough tears, or “owning” the developers of the iPhone jailbreak and unlock for that they should produce in all eternity or wordlessly. You realize how delusional people are like that when you get messages such as: “Without us you are nothing, we follow you on Twitter and we’ve made it famous,” and then there are messages like, ‘Take him to follow a lesson. ”

Every time I see these posts I hope for mankind that these people are not convinced of what they say. People do not become famous because it has thousands of followers on Twitter, but it’s the other way: that is, are those people to have created something that the masses have enjoyed and gained followers. It’s up to you whether you consider yourself famous because few people know your name. I do not think it can be considered a famous until you come recognized on the street and you have to hide from the paparazzi. In any case, the amount of Twitter followers is only a concern to me, because it is directly linked to the number of people who have to manually lock.

How you deal with these people every day? That is, not everyone can tolerate such a situation for long. For example, I remember that because of this, held his geohot jailbreak iPhone OS 4.X From Twitter see at least some of your supporters for your hard work?

I do not think it has anything to do with “bear such a situation” at the beginning come irritated and can not believe the amount of anger and demands from the people but once it goes beyond the initial shock, just keep doing what want. I can understand when he held geohot jailbreak iPhone OS 4.X due to these people, because they get this type of reaction is a warning that I reallizare they are not worthy of your work, issued free of charge. In any case geohot and the Chronic Dev Team are / were also collecting donations, so they got enough to go ahead.

I also think part of this whole thing is caused by some of the jailbreak developers who write post where he said it was their intention to work day and night to release the new “change” to users. This blatant lie is the kind of statement that the crowd would love it, when in fact the work is done when there is time and mood to do it. Either way, tell people the truth will only create antipathy toward you and most likely, this would amount to less donations.

We finished with the interview! Thanks for your time: you please say something to our users?

Oh I think I said everything I wanted to say for now: I’ll wait to be inundated by the next wave of criticism.

The Taller 4-inch iPhone 5 [Interactive 3D Model]

One of the most popular rumors about the next generation iPhone is about the device having a larger screen. iLounge recently reported that the next iPhone would indeed have a larger screen, but rather than making the idevice wider to fit a bigger display, they predicted that Apple would actually make it taller. The folks over at MacRumors took this 4-inch iPhone rumor and turned it into a beautiful interactive 3D model…

The site hired designer Federico Ciccarese to put together the concept images above and as you can see, he did a great job. The rumors suggest that the taller screen would give users an extra row of icons on the springboard. Personally, however, I don’t find the taller design to be appealing at all.

Nonetheless, you can check out the interactive 3D model for yourself and be the judge. Don’t get me wrong, the phone looks pretty nice, but there are many better alternatives to simply making it taller.

What do you think? Do you like the design? Or is there a better way that Apple can incorporate a larger screen?

Untethered iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak Coming in Just Two Weeks!

Untethered iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak Coming in Just Two Weeks!

Legendary iOS hacker pod2g has done a great job keeping our community up to date on the progress being made on the untethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak. Today, he announced some great news: the jailbreak should be out within the next two weeks.

The hacker has just released a FAQ answering some of the questions that we have all been wondering.  Head inside to check it out:

Here is the full Q/A from pod2g’s blog:

The poll about releasing now or waiting for 6.0 ended with a 64% / 33% to release ASAP. Where is the link ? ETA ? How much % done ? etc.

As I said earlier in twitter, there’s still a lot to do to have a user friendly and well tested tool to install the jailbreak on end users devices. Expect a release in a couple of weeks.

Will it be compatible with my ?

It will be compatible with any device running iOS 5.1.1 except iPod 3G, iPhone3Gs and ATV3 (right now, may change in a near future, nobody knows).

Why is it so slow to release now that the iPad 3,1 has been demoed ?

There are 16 different devices out there to work on and to test. It takes time.

May I be a beta tester?

No, sorry. Only really trusted people (that can be counted on one hand) could have access to the jailbreak. I don’t want any leak to happen.

What if I offer you 1,000,000$?

That doesn’t change a thing.

So there you have it folks! The jailbreak is only 2 weeks away and it is now safe to update to iOS 5.1.1! It’s important to note that the jailbreak excludes the Apple TV 3, iPod 3G and iPhone 3GS. Stay tuned!

iOS 6 Code-named Sundance, to Bring New Map Software and 3rd Party Siri Support

iOS 6 Code-named Sundance, to Bring New Map Software and 3rd Party Siri Support

Rumors play a huge part in our community, as we hear tons of predictions and speculations months before every Apple release. With the WWDC 2012 event being less than a month away, imaginations are running wild about the upcoming iOS 6 firmware, nicknamed “sundance.”

One rumor that is showing to hold some truth to it is that Apple will be moving away from Google Maps and using their own mapping software instead. 9to5Mac first reported the rumor yesterday and John Packowski of AllThingsD was able to confirm it later.

A report from TechCrunch is also adding to the rumors and is claiming that iOS 6 will include a Siri API for developers to implement the virtual assistant into their apps. This is really no surprise as its jailbreak developers have been finding ways to increase Siri’s functionality for months now. The report also claims that the Siri feature may be headed to the iPad:

“…there have been whispers backing up Gruber’s assertion that Siri APIs are another possibility [for iOS 6]. There have also been whispers about Siri for iPad finally coming. Specifically, I’ve been lead to believe it’s more of a UI issue than anything else.”

MC Siegler of TechCrunch also reports that Apple will finally be releasing a new iTunes. The company is supposedly planning on releasing a completely revamped version of iTunes alongside the new iOS 6 firmware:

“There is also some chatter about iTunes 11. It has been a not-so-well-kept secret that Apple has been trying to completely re-write the software for a long time. There have been several false starts and scrapping of projects. It’s believed (but far from confirmed) that Apple may be zeroing in on the major revamp they’re after. And a part of that may be both Apple and the labels warming to a full-on Spotify competitor…”

The “Spotify competitor” tidbit is very exciting news and we definitely can’t wait to see what the folks at Cupertino are cooking up. We’re only a month away from the truth. Stay tuned!

How to: Downgrade Your iPhone 4S, iPad 2, or New iPad Using RedSnow 0.9.11b1

How to: Downgrade Your iPhone 4S, iPad 2, or New iPad Using RedSnow 0.9.11b1

It’s finally here folks! The newest version of RedSn0w has just been released and allows users to downgrade their iPhone 4S, iPad 2, or new iPad! Downgrading firmwares to iOS 5.0.1 will allow you to jailbreak (untethered) your iPhone 4S or iPad 2!

Head inside for a step-by-step guide on how to downgrade firmwares now:

Note: In order to downgrade, you must have your SHSH blobs saved for iOS 5.0.1, either through TinyUmbrella or Cydia.

Step 1: Download the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.11b1 (Mac • Windows).

Step 2: Download the latest iOS 5.1.1 firmware for your idevice (links posted after this guide). You will also need to download the 5.0.1 firmware.

Step 3: Put your idevice into DFU mode.

Step 4: Run RedSn0w, plug your device in and make sure RedSn0w detects it in DFU mode. Go to Extras > Restore and click IPSW. RedSn0w will than ask you for the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW so locate it. After that, RedSn0w will again ask for the latest firmware (iOS 5.1.1), find and choose it.

Step 5: After both firmwares are recognized, you will then need to find your SHSH blobs. If your device has been jailbroken before, you should have the blobs in Cydia and will be able to use the Remote option. If you haven’t jailbroken before and used TinyUmbrella, you’ll need to choose local and find the blobs on your computer.

Step 6: After finding your blobs, RedSn0w will install a hacked version of the latest firmware than downgrade your device to iOS 5.0.1.

Step 7: You will then get a success message! You’ve now downgraded your device! Make sure to head over to Settings > General > About to verify that you are running iOS 5.0.1.

You can now jailbreak your A5 device by using Absinthe or even RedSn0w! You can check out our step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 and find help in the forums. Let us know how it goes for you!

Guy Implants 4 Magnets in His Wrist to Hold an iPod Nano

Have you been in the market to buy a cool-looking watch lately? Well, tattoo artist Dave Hurban found the perfection solution to his watch problem by implanting 4 powerful magnets into his left wrist to hold a late-generation iPod Nano in place…

Yes, it looks pretty cool but we’re not sure that this is the brightest of ideas. Does his wrist stick to the fridge every time he tries to get something to eat? What about when Apple changes the Nano’s design?

Nonetheless, the man went for it. And here’s the video:

Pod2g Shows Off iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak on the iPad 3 in New Video

We reported earlier today about pod2g getting an iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on his new iPad. Now, the famous hacker has posted a video showing the jailbreak in action…

The demo video shows a fully working untethered jailbreak on a new iPad running iOS 5.1. It opens Cydia in the vieo and does a full reboot showing that it is indeed untethered. Pod2g also mentions that if this jailbreak works on both the iPhone 4 and latest iPad, it should also work for all other devices, including the iPhone 4S. This is definitely great news, and I have a feeling we’re getting real close to seeing the jailbreak release. Stay tuned!

New $99 Case Brings Free 4G Data Speeds to Your iPhone

Although we are all expecting to see the next generation idevices feature LTE, there might be something to keep you happy until then. FreedomPop, a 4G mobile broadband provider, has just started accepting pre-orders for a $99 iPhone case that gives your device free 4G data speeds. The product is backed by co-founder of Skype, Niklas Zennstrom, and gives owners of the case 500MB of free 4G data every month.

More data packages will also be sold introduced in the future, but details haven’t been released yet. The case will be available for both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. But the real question is: Does this thing actually work? Head inside to watch a video of it in action:

The case uses Clearwire’s WiMax network to get the 4G data. It hooks into the iPhone’s dock connector and immediately shows up under the WiFi section in the Settings app. It is definitely an awesome option for those who want more speed right now.

We’re not sure how well the cases will sell considering the fact that the next iPhone will most likely have LTE featured. But it is still a great option for those who want faster speeds on their iPhone 4 or 4S.

You can pre-order a case now from FreedomPop’s website. They are expected to ship sometime this summer. Will you be getting one?

Apple to Release a 7-inch iPad in October for Less Than $250

We’ve heard countless rumors about an upcoming “mini-iPad”, and although we’ve gotten pretty bored of it, iMore has just released an interesting new report. The site claims that a reliable source has learned that Apple will be launching a 7-inch iPad this fall. It is supposedly to launch along with the iPhone for less than $250.

iMore has been correct about a number of predictions in the past so we wouldn’t be surprised if this report holds some truth to it. The site reports:

“We haven’t gotten a firm read on the exact dimensions, s we’re using 7-inches generically here. Our source has indicated, however, that the 7-inch iPad will be identical in every way to our current 9.7-inch iPad, just scaled down. That seems to include a 2048×1536 resolution display, just like the new iPad. If accurate, that would put the pixel density at around 326 ppi, identical to the iPhone 4S (and higher than the 264 ppi new iPad) Retina display.”

What do you think? Will Apple actually unveil a smaller iPad?

DoNotDisturb Brings an Upcoming OS X Feature to iOS

Jailbreaking is all about getting the most out of our idevices. Customization plays the biggest role as we can tweak and mod the platform however we want to suit us best. Well, sometimes getting the most out of our idevices can be as simple as a tweak like DoNotDisturb, which just hit the Cydia store.

Many times, I find myself wanting to pull my hair out due to my phone exploding with notifications while I’m trying to play a game, watch a video or even sleep. However, DoNotDisturb brings a feature we can all use: an On/Off toggle button on the Notification Center that can stop every notification from ringing or showing banners.

The tweak is very useful and super simple. In fact, the simplicity is probably my favorite thing about it. It does the job well, and it’s easy to get to. After installing, you’ll need to head into Settings > Notifications, and than add the tweak into the Notification Center.

You can grab the new tweak now from the ModMyI repo for free. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Clock Widget - The First Dashboard X Tweak Gets Released

Earlier this week, we told you about the awesome new jailbreak tweak Dashboard X, which allows you to place widgets on your springboard. Now, the first add-on has just been released, and it looks great!

The new “Clock Widget” for Dashboard X places a clean digital clock with a transparent background on your homescreen. As you can see from the image above, it looks very nice and with a little tweaking, it’ll look almost natural.

But perhaps the best thing about this new tweak is the excitement it brings us. What else will developers come up with? There is much more room to play around with now and this is where creativity really comes in. There are now endless ideas that can actually be created thanks to Dashboard X.

Nonetheless, if you want to grab the new Clock Widget, you can head over to the ModMyI repo and grab it for free. Of coarse, you’ll need to have the Dashboard X tweak installed in order for it to work, which costs $1.99. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Dashboard X - Add Widgets Right Onto Your Homescreen

iOS and Android fans are always getting into it with each other about which platform is best. Of coarse, it really all comes down to preference, as both platforms are fantastic options. However, one of the things that I’ve heard many Android fans complain about is the fact that iOS does not support widgets. Well, thanks to a new jailbreak tweak named Dashboard X, that is no longer the case…

The amazing new tweak allows users to place any installed Notification Center widgets right on your idevice’s springboard (homescreen). The process of doing so is super simple. To place widgets on the homescreen, you will have to hold your finger down on the screen to enter the “wiggle mode.” This will then bring up a list of all your installed Notification Center widgets that you choose from and move around on your homescreen.

New widgets are already being developed for Dashboard X, including Dashtweet, which is a widget that will allow you to tweet from anywhere on your homescreen. Much more advanced widgets will be able to be worked on now thanks to the new tweak and we’re definitely excited to see what our community comes up with.

You can head over to Cydia now and grab Dashboard X for only $1.99 from the ModMyI repo. Check it out and let us know what you think!

T-Mobile Roasts on AT&T’s iPhone Speeds in Latest Ad

T-Mobile announced yesterday that it will be upgrading its network and making it iPhone-ready by the end of this year. The carrier has been working hard to upgrade their network and take its competition head on. It has recently also launched a new ad campaign named “Alter Ego”, and is “challenging the status quo and taking bold steps in the marketplace as a challenger brand”.

In the latest ad, the carrier portrays AT&T’s iPhone 4S speed as a regular old motorcycle that gets smoked by the T-Mobile speed (a beautiful 1000cc Ducati motorcycle). On the video’s description, T-Mobile writes, “How much faster is T-Mobile’s 4G network compared to the iPhone 4S on AT&T’s network? Don’t blink or you may miss it.” Although T-Mobile isn't an official Apple partner, it still has over a million iPhone users on its network. Head inside to check the ad out:

Upcoming RedSn0w Update Will Allow You to Downgrade Your iDevice’s Firmware

MuscleNerd has just announced that the upcoming update to RedSn0w will let users do full restores right within the jailbreak tool, which means you will no longer have to use iTunes to restore an idevice. But the feature that is getting all the attention is the upcoming ability to downgrade to previous firmwares (even A5 and A5X devices).

Yes, that’s right, you will be able to downgrade firmwares with the next version of RedSn0w! However, there is a catch – as there always is. In order to downgrade firmwares, you will have to have your SHSH blobs saved for the firmware you want to downgrade to. So this unfortunately means that if your idevice came with iOS 5.1 pre-installed, you will not be able to downgrade to iOS 5.0.1 to have an untethered jailbreak...

We originally thought that this method had something to do with the loophole found by iH8sn0w two months ago, but the loophole apparently deals with some copyright issues preventing the use of it. Thankfully, MuscleNerd assures us that his method is a completely different approach and is 100% legal.

Make sure to tune into iPD daily to find out when it will be released! We will post a step-by-step guide as soon as it is released. Stay tuned!

T-Mobile Will Be iPhone-Ready By the End of This Year

T-Mobile, the nation’s 4th largest mobile carrier, has struggled to keep up with its top competitors, and the lack of Apple’s iPhone on their smartphone line-up certainly doesn’t help. However, has just announced that its network will be ready for the iPhone by the end of the year.

T-Mobile is upgrading its 4G network to launch HSPA+ in the 1900 MHz band this year. This will definitely improve their service and make it compatible with our beloved iPhone.

“As part of the company’s network modernization effort, T-Mobile also plans to launch 4G HSPA+ service in the 1900 MHz band in a large number of markets by the end of the year. Network modernization trials have shown up to a 33 percent increase in HSPA+ data speeds as well as improved in-building coverage. Rolling out 4G HSPA+ services in the 1900 MHz band will also provide customers with the ability to use a broader range of devices, including the iPhone, on T-Mobile’s 4G network.”

Although T-Mobile is actually not an official iPhone carrier, there is currently around 1 million iPhones on its network. Many people have unlocked their iPhones and jumped to T-Mobile, despite the limited speeds and setbacks. The new upgrade, however, will change that. No longer will T-Mobile iPhone users have to suffer 2G speeds.

This can also help T-Mobile become a partner with Apple to officially carry the idevice and also attract a many more users.

How many of you are currently using an iPhone on T-Mobile? If not, would you make the jump if it became compatible?

Apple Patches URL Spoofing Exploit in Latest iOS 5.1.1 Update

Back in March, we told you about a dangerous URL spoofing vulnerability in mobile Safari that was discovered by David Viera-Kurz of Major Security. The exploit allows web pages to spoof URLs in mobile Safari’s address bar, making users think they are a different website than they really are.

Thankfully, Apple has just patched this issue in the latest iOS 5.1.1 update that they released yesterday. Apple explains the bug fix on the iOS 5.1.1 security support page:

“Safari

Available for: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, iPad 2

Impact: A maliciously crafted website may be able to spoof the address in the location bar

Description: A URL spoofing issue existed in Safari. This could be used in a malicious web site to direct the user to a spoofed site that visually appeared to be a legitimate domain. This issue is addressed through improved URL handling. This issue does not affect OS X systems.”

It’s definitely great to see Apple take action and patch things up to quickly. The company has always been known for its reliability and security, and it’s easy to see why.

Have you updated to iOS 5.1.1 yet? Have you noticed in bugs still left in it?

VolumeColor - Change the Color of the Volume HUD on Your iDevice

iOS developers PrimeCode and CoolStar have teamed up to bring a cool new tweak that allows users to change the color of the Volume HUD. Although it doesn’t bring a huge change, customizing your volume indicator can add a little extra spice to your themes.

The tweak comes with a settings panel that allows you to choose from a number of different colors, as well as the option to enable/disable the tweak. It’s also pretty convenient that the color changes immediately after you choose it, meaning you won’t have to respring your idevice every time you change colors. The list of colors includes:

·       Black

·       Red

·       Orange

·       Yellow

·       Green

·       Blue

·       Pink

·       Purple

·       White

·       Gray

The tweak is perfect for mixing with different colored themes. Unfortunately, the tweak is limited to a list pre-defined colors. Nonetheless, you can check the tweak out now at the BigBoss repo for free. Check it out and let us know what you think!

How to: Do a Tethered Jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 Using RedSn0w

How to: Do a Tethered Jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 Using RedSn0w

Apple just released iOS 5.1.1 a few moments ago and we already have a step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak your idevice on the new firmware! This jailbreak is a tethered jailbreak and only works on idevices that are already jailbreakable on iOS 5 (meaning no A5 devices yet). If you're on an iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or new iPad, you'll unfortunately have to wait until the jailbreak is released for A5+ devices.

Head inside for the full step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak your idevice on iOS 5.1.1 now!

Note: RedSn0w currently does not recognize iOS 5.1.1 so you will need to use 5.1 in step 3.

Step 1: Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b (Mac • Windows).

Step 2: After connecting your idevice into your computer, put it into DFU mode and run RedSn0w.

Step 3: Click on Extras > Select IPSW > and choose your iOS 5.1 firmware for your device.

Step 4: After RedSn0w recognizes the firmware, go back to the main page and click Jailbreak.

Step 5: After indentifying the build, click Next to install Cydia.

Step 6: After Cydia installs, your idevice will reboot. You will then need to place it back into DFU mode.

Step 7: Go to the Extras page on RedSn0w and do a tethered boot by clicking on Just boot.

And that’s all folks! Your idevice will now be jailbroken and have Cydia on your springboard!

Remember that this is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you will have to plug your idevice into your computer everytime you reboot to keep your jailbreak. Also, this is ONLY for A4 devices and older. The iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and new iPad are NOT supported yet.

Apple Releases iOS 5.1.1

Apple has just released iOS 5.1.1! The update this time around is much more focused on bug fixes and enhancements than the last iOS 5.1 update. The new iOS 5.1.1 includes:

·       Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut

·       Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks

·       Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances

·       Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List

·       Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase

Of coarse, it’s important that jailbreakers stay away from this update! An untethered jailbreak is NOT available. However, there is a tethered jailbreak available for A4 devices and older.

iOS 5.1.1 supports all of the idevices that can update to iOS 5.1. You can find more info at Apple Security Updates.

Which Really Came First: iPhone or Android? [Infographic]

We’re not sure why an infographic like this is necessary, or why the topic even matters, but we’re always going to have those fanboys and fangirls that take things to the next level.

Personally (and I hope this applies to many of you as well), I just go with whatever product is the best for me and suits me the most. I can care less if the iPhone came a year before the first Android phone or vice versa.  Nonetheless, the folks over at Apple Gazzete have put together an infographic investigating which platform came first. We love a good concept here at iPD, even if they seem far-fetched at times. We brought you a fantastic holographic iPhone concept yesterday, and today we bring you something just as awesome.

As you already know, transferring files between devices isn’t the easiest thing in the world, nor is it the most enjoyable. Designer Ishac Bertran believes this is the case due to the fact that there is no “tangible connection” in a file sync. He’s put together an amazing concept video that would let a user transfer files between an iPhone and MacBook by simply holding the idevice next to the MacBook’s screen. When held side-by-side, the devices detect each other and a half circle appears on each screen, enabling you to drag and drop any files you want. Head inside for the video demonstration:

"I thought that a representation of a physical connection would facilitate a more intuitive interaction based on traditional mental models from the physical world,” says Bertran. But of coarse, the video doesn’t explain how something like this would actually work. Although it definitely looks like a cool approach to file transfer, we doubt we’ll see anything like this in the near future. Nonetheless, it’s still an awesome video and creative idea.

What do you think? Would you use this if it were available over the other current options? Let us know in the comments section below!

Amazing iPad text editing video concept now a free jailbreak tweak

A few days ago, an awesome concept video of a new way to edit text on the iPad made the rounds and everyone wanted a piece of it. The video, made by Daniel Chase Hooper, showed a new method of editing text using finger drags and gestures instead of the horrid current ‘tap and drag’. Frankly, I don’t know how no one thought of this before, as it is the perfect solution to our current editing mess. Check it out:

We’re happy to announce that developer Kyle Howells has actually turned the concept into a jailbreak tweak named SwipeSelection and is now available in Cydia for free! We were all hoping that Apple would take notice and implement this feature in iOS 6 but it looks like we won’t have to wait that long!

The tweak is absolutely amazing and makes life much easier for avid texters and note-takers. Head over to Cydia now and check it out! Let us know what you think about it.

Magical Holographic iPhone Concept Makes You Drool For the Future [Video]

Although holographic displays on smartphones is way far-fetched for the time being, it’s still a concept that we love to dream about. We have 3D, and it’s great, but holograms take magic to the next level.

Designer Michael Ko put together an absolutely beautiful concept video showing off what futuristic iPhones could be like with holographic capabilities. The 3D objects literally pop out from the screen to bring something phenomenal to the viewer.

Of coarse, we won’t see anything like this hit the streets anytime soon. But there’s nothing wrong with dreaming…

“Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview” coming back to theaters on May 11th

Weeks after Late CEO of Apple Steve Jobs passed away, never before seen footage titled “Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview” hit select theaters. Well, if you missed it then, you’ll be able to catch it at Landmark Theatres on May 11th!

Magnolia Pictures has confirmed that it will be bringing the 70-minute documentary back to the big screen one more time and will also be releasing it on DVD later this summer. The interview is from 17 years ago when Apple was about to acquire NeXT. However, the footage was apparently lost during shipping, and finally recovered many years later. Check out a few clips from the interview in the video below:

The documentary is definitely worth checking out if you haven't already seen it.

Walmart denies offering huge sales on iPhones [Updated]

UPDATE: Walmart’s iPhone sales was apparently a mistake, a company spokesperson told 9to5Mac:

"Walmart just responded to 9to5Mac’s inquiry and said the retail chain “experienced a pricing error in limited stores” yesterday. The company spokesperson said the issue has been addressed and normal prices are now in effect: 16GB iPhone 4S for $188, iPhone 4 for $88, and iPhone 3GS for $0.97."

Walmart is known for its low prices and has been selling our beloved iPhone 4S (16GB) for only $188 since last November. But, according to Cult of Mac, prices are about to get a whole lot cheaper…

Apparently, Walmart will be slashing prices on the latest AT&T iPhone models down to $114 with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 is also getting some love, with the 8GB model being cut down to only $34!

It is important to note, however, that it’s still unclear which and how many locations are participating in this sale. The image of the flyer above comes from a Walmart in Edmund, Oklahoma. Some folks have reported that their local Walmarts don’t seem to be offering the sale and Walmart’s website still shows the $188 price tag.

Nonetheless, if you’re planning on getting your hands on a new iPhone, your local Walmart is definitely worth checking out. Let us know how it goes for you!

New iPad 2 comes with improved A5 chip that adds 2 hours additional battery life

Although the obvious choice between an iPad 2 and a new iPad is the latter, the expensive price tag on Apple’s latest tablet may push some customers to get the iPad 2 instead. Well, there’s good news for anyone interested in picking up a new iPad 2, as Apple has just begun shipping them with the company’s new 32nm A5 chip. The new chip boasts 2 hours of additional battery life compared to the 45nm A5 chip that the ipad 2 originally came with.

According to testing done by AnandTech, the new chip saves 15.8 when browsing the web, 18% for video playback and an impressive 29% for intense gaming. There is, however, one problem for buyers who are looking to get their hands on the new iPad 2. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell whether the iPad 2 you’re purchasing will carry the original or new 32nm chip. The new iPad 2s are being reffered to as “iPad 2,4” but there is no official labeling or anything on the package that would give it off.

The new chip drains nearly 30% less battery life, is 40% smaller than the original A5 chip and costs less money to make. This is definitely great progress for Apple and I think it’s safe to say that we should see some great hardware in the next generation idevices.

JP Morgan: Apple won’t release an HDTV set until 2014

There has been a lot of talk about a rumored Apple TV set for the past couple of months now. Apple hasn’t officially announced anything yet but it seems as if the whole world is anticipating this mysterious HDTV set. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster has claimed that Apple is indeed working on the rumored product, but an analyst from JP Morgan seems to disagree.

In an a note to investors this morning, JP Morgan’s Mark Moskowitz said that he doesn’t believe the economic conditions are good enough for Apple to release a TV set this year. Furthermore, he believes that the climate won’t be right until sometime in 2014...

"We are not sure that the Apple premium could prevail in the TV market," he says, "unless there is a radical change of the user interface, integration of the TV programming and data content, and use of gesture or voice control."

The analyst does believe, however, that Apple will eventually release a TV set. But until than, they will continue to just refresh the current Apple TV box.

What do you think of Moskowitz’s predictions? Will Apple release a TV set this year or wait until the economic climate is better?

pod2g now running iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4

Famous iOS hacker pod2g has just announced that he has a fully working iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4! We reported earlier this week that pod2g had made great progress on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak over the weekend, and now it looks like we’re that much closer to seeing it.

There is, however, still a lot of work to be done for A5 devices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2). But, it’s good to see that the hacker is continuing his work on the jailbreak. He recently posted a poll asking what jailbreakers thought: to continue work on iOS 5.1 jailbreak or to save exploits for iOS 6. Well, the majority of jailbreakers voted that they wanted the iOS 5.1 jailbreak now, and it looks like they might get it.

It’s important to note that it takes a lot of time to package and prepare the jailbreak for mass distribution so it may still take a while before we see it, even for A4 devices. Nonetheless, at least we know it’s possible, and coming soon….

Creator of Liquidmetal says it probably won’t be on the next iPhone

Rumors of the next iPhone being made out of liquidmetal have flooded the blogosphere over the past couple of weeks. Excitement around this rumor has really built up and many are expecting to see the new technology in the next-gen idevices. However, according to the Liquidmetal’s creator, that actually may not be the case.

In an interview with Business Insider, Atakan Parker (the man behind the new technology) said that Apple will eventually implement Liquidmetal into its products, but not just yet…

In the interview, Parker explains how he discovered and developed Liquidmetal while studying for his PhD at Caltech. He also describes the new technology as super strong, scratch and corrosion resistant, and can be precisely designed and molded into different shapes.

This is definitely exciting news, but Parker admits that the technology hasn’t been completely perfected yet. Being brand new, there isn’t a “suitable manufacturing infrastructure yet to take full advantage of this alloy technology.” This means that Apple will need to spend a couple hundred million dollars over the next couple of years to perfect Liquidmetal and prepare it for commercial use.

Parker goes on to say:

“I expect Apple to use this technology in a breakthrough product [bringing] an innovative user interface and industrial design together, [which would be] difficult to copy or duplicate with other material technologies.”

So there you have it, folks. As much as we’d love to see Liquidmetal on the next iPhone, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a reality. However, Apple is known for its secrecy and no one really knows what’s going on inside those garden walls. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more info. Stay tuned!

AlwaysArrange - Arrange Home Screen icons without having to enter wiggle mode

As you already know, in order to move an app icon on your idevice’s homescreen, you must first enter wiggle mode by tapping and holding on one of the icons. However, iOS developer rud0lf77 has come up with a clever alternative with his new AlwaysArrange jailbreak tweak. The tweak allows you to move apps around whenever you want without having to enter wiggle mode. In fact, the tweak completely disables wiggle mode from iOS, including the App Switcher.

The tweak comes with some settings so that you can adjust how long you want to hold down on an app icon to pick it up and move it. You also have the option to enable or disable AlwaysArrange right in the settings.

So you may be wondering, why should I use this tweak? What’s the difference? Well, there are two main reasons why rud0lf77’s approach is better than Apple’s. For one, you can’t accidentally delete apps from your home screen anymore. Since you can’t enter wiggle mode, you won’t see the black ‘X’ buttons on the apps to delete them. In order to bring these buttons up, you have to drag any icon into the Status Bar, which enters the real editing mode - or wiggle mode - where you can delete apps.

Secondly, moving apps around becomes much faster with this tweak. No longer will you have to press and hold to enter the wiggle mode. Simply press and drag any icon you want around the springboard.

So there you have it, folks. If you dislike the wiggle mode feature, you can head over to the ModMyI repo and give this free tweak a try. Let us know how you like it!

Another gorgeous liquidmetal iPhone 5 concept

We posted an awesome concept named the iPhone Plus earlier today by the talented ADR Team. Now, we have another gorgeous concept of what the next-gen iPhone could look like. French designer Antoine Brieux brings us this liquidmetal iPhone 5 concept, and as you can see from the pictures, it’s gorgeous.

It features a quad-core A6 processor, a 4.5-inch Retina display, 10MP camera, virtual home button, and a stunning liquidmetal case. All of these features are somewhat possible except for two: the 4.5-inch display and virtual home button…

It’s highly unlikely that Apple will go anything bigger than 4-inches on the next iPhone. Apple has kept the current screen size because of the fact that you can easily touch anywhere on the screen using just one hand. As much as we might like a larger screen, jumping almost a whole inch seems improbable.

Secondly, the virtual home button seems like an awesome concept at first. It would save a whole lot of room and enable Apple to use a larger display and keep almost the same form factor. However, if Apple is to actually ditch the home button, I doubt they’ll replace it with a virtual one. There are much more elegant solutions than this.

Nonetheless, it’s still a damn good-looking concept. What do you think? Would you buy the next iPhone if it looked like this? Would you prefer this or the iPhone Plus?

The beautiful iPhone Plus concept

We love seeing cool Apple concepts here at iPD, and the folks over at ADR Studio never cease to amaze. The same folks who brought you the iPhone SJ concept (along with many others) are now back at it again with the iPhone Plus…

The iPhone Plus concept is simply gorgeous. The concept is based around recent rumored features of the upcoming iPhone, as well as some features that we can only wish for...

As you can see from the images, the concept phone is much thinner and sports a larger 4.3-inch Retina display. Based off of recent rumors, the ADR team uses a liquid metal body on the phone, along with In-Cell touch technology for the display. It also packs the rumored slimmer 30-pin dock connector and new home button.

And now, for the not-so realistic features… The iPhone Plus sports a pico-projector, a 10-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing cam and an A6 quad-core processor. Not that these features are impossible, but they are highly unlikely far-fetched.

Nonetheless, the concept looks wonderful. What do you think of the iPhone Plus? Would you buy the next iPhone if it looked like this?

pod2g finds two big vulnerabilities, updates us on iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak

Last week, we reported that pod2g wanted to know what the jailbreak community thought about the untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak. He asked whether he should continue his work or wait until iOS 6 was released. Although there’s still two more days for people to voice their opinions, it appears that the community has pretty much made its mind up: bring the iOS 5.1 jailbreak on! Out of 135,961 votes, 61% of the voters want pod2g to continue working on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak.

Well, we finally have some great news regarding the status of the jailbreak, as pod2g has just let us in on some more info. The famous hacker has just tweeted, “News: a productive week-end. Found 2 big vulnerabilities. 1 kernel land and 1 root land.”

So there you have it folks, it looks like pod2g may actually continue his work on the 5.1 jailbreak. We did, however, warn folks last week that this would effect the future iOS 6 jailbreak, as Apple no doubt patch the exploits in the next software. Many reports are pointing to iOS being released in a month at WWDC. If this is the case, it may be worth waiting for.

Nonetheless, we’ll see what the hacker decides to do in two days. We’ll keep you posted as more info is released. Stay tuned!

Giffy - Watch animated GIF images right from your Camera Roll

An awesome new jailbreak tweak was released on Cydia today that brings something we’ve been desperately waiting for: watching .gif images right from the Camera Roll. I’ve saved many hilarious .gif images from Safari only to find that I can’t watch them on the Camera Roll. However, a jailbreak tweak named Giffy by iOS developer IanP is about to change that.

After installing Giffy, you can simply open up the Mobile Safari app (or Alien Blue for all you Redditors out there) and find a cool .gif image and save it. You will then be able to simply watch any .gif image animate right from your Camera Roll. In fact, they even play faster in the Camera Roll than in Mobile Safari since they are saved on your idevice. But that’s not even the best part…

Not only will you be able to see .gif images play right from the Camera Roll, but any other application with image abilities such as the Messages app will also be able to display .gifs playing. This enables you to actually watch .gifs right when people message them to you on MMS or iMessage. Is that awesome or what?

You can grab Giffy now for only $0.99 from the BigBoss repo. It’s definitely a great addition to your jailbreak tweaks and brings a much needed feature. Check it out and let us know what you think!

A physical keyboard was seriously considered for the original iPhone

Earlier this year we posted a picture of smartphones before and after the iPhone. The image shows that to say that the iPhone wasn’t revolutionary is simply ridiculous. However, it appears that Apple was seriously considering a different design for the iPhone, one that included a physical keyboard…

Had Apple chosen a design other than the iconic one that was released, things may not have gone the way they did. Ex-Senior Vice President of Apple Tony Fadell revealed some very interesting information on The Verge’s talk show last night:

“namely, that a hardware keyboard was seriously considered within Apple before the iconic touchscreen-only design was given the green light. He said there were three different versions: an “iPod + Phone,” a different iteration that was called the “iPhone,” and finally, the device that was ultimately introduced back in January of 2007.”

Fadell was first hired at Apple back in February of 2001 as a contracted designer for the original iPod, so the man definitely knows what he’s talking about. Before leaving in late 2008, he saw 18 different designs for the iPod and 3 different versions of the iPhone.

Of coarse, the all-touchscreen design was the perfect move for Apple. It literally changed the smartphone market and has brought Apple to the top of the world.

We would, however, still love to see the other versions of iPhones and iPods that the company has scratched. What would an iPhone with a physical keyboard look like? Would Apple have had the same success? I guess we’ll never know…

GEVEY’s Ultra 5.1 SIM interposer disabled due to Apple fixing servers, Apple N Berry issuing refunds

In the matter of only a few days, the iPhone unlock situation has completely turned upside down. The SAM method of unlocking an iPhone that was released recently no longer works after Apple fixed their activation servers. But wait there’s more….

We recently told you that there was a new version of GEVEY’s sim interposer that made unlocking iPhones much easier. Apparently, the latest GEVEY Ultra 5.1S SIM interposer also used the same exploit as the SAM method, which means that it no longer works as well.

Personally, I don’t understand why the SIM interposer was needed in the first place if there was a free software that did the same thing. Why pay $50 for something that you can find free? And how does it even need the hardware?

Nonetheless, Apple N Berry states that Ai Guan Digital Technology Co. (the company behind GEVEY) takes full responsibility and is giving full refunds to customers who bought the latest interposer. You should be receiving a refund through Paypal within ten days if you bought an unlock.

It’s worth noting, however, that this was the only SIM interposer that used this exploit, as the previous models still work.

The SAM unlock method for the iPhone no longer working

If you have already unlocked your iPhone using the SAM method, consider yourself lucky, as it appears that the method is no longer working. Apple has apparently fixed the issue with its activation server that the SAM method was using to unlock the idevices.

A few of us here at iPD tried it this morning after hearing comments from our readers, and unfortunately, we can confirm that it’s no longer working (at least for us). However, there hasn’t been an official word from the iPhone Dev team yet.

It’s important to note that if you’ve already unlocked your iPhone using this method, please backup your activation tickets! You can either back up manually or using RedSn0w but make sure you freakin’ do it. If you back up your ticket, you will be able to unlock your iPhone even after restoring it.

What do you think? Did you unlock your iPhone in time?

-  Latvia

-  Lithuania

-  Montenegro

-  South Africa

-  Thailand

Unfortunately, China is still missing from that list. The country is most definitely a huge market and can really help Apple’s sales (not that they aren’t already impressive).

So, do you live in one of the countries that just got the iPad? Will you be grabbing the new device?

Samsung takes it to the streets with its latest anti-Apple “Wake Up” marketing campaign

One of the biggest things that Apple has going for it is the customer loyalty it has built. There are hundreds of thousands of Apple enthusiasts around the globe, which have helped the company skyrocket to the top of the world. This fanboyism (for lack of a better term) is something that the folks over at Samsung have been trying to understand for the longest time. And now, they finally think they have it down.

We’ve seen numerous Samsung ads poking fun of Apple users over the past couple of months, but Sammy has just taken it to the next level. In preparation for the Galaxy S III launch, Samsung has hired an ad company named Tongue. Tongue took it to the streets with a guerilla campaign today protesting outside an Apple Store in Sydney, Australia. After a mysterious black bus with the words “Wake Up” painted on the side pulled up to an Apple Store, around 50 protesters got out and protested with signs and chants:

The “Wake Up” campaign seems to be popping up around Sydney in numerous places including billboards and the bottom of Bondi Iceberg’s pool. So, what exactly is this “Wake Up” campaign? Well, it’s a sad attempt at making fun of iPhone users. Samsung recently had an ad depicting iPhone users as sheep buying Apple products. The company is desperately trying to build the same kind of fanboyish following that Apple has and is trying all kinds of different things to achieve that. Why they don’t just make awesome products instead of annoy people is beyond me. I guess we’ll see how well it works after the SGIII launches.

pod2g asks whether to release iOS 5.1 jailbreak or hold off until iOS 6

Pod2g has been hard at work on the iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak. The famous iOS hacker recently tweeted that the new jailbreak might take around a month or 2 before it would be ready for launch. However, a new idea is holding the hacker back from continuing: should we wait for iOS 6?

Pod2g has put up a poll on his personal blog asking, “Shall we hold off the jailbreak for iOS 6?” The problem is that if a jailbreak is release for iOS 5.1 now, Apple will definitely patch the exploit before iOS 6 is released. This would mean that pod2g and the other hackers involved in the jailbreaks would basically have to start from scratch again.

There are many rumors claiming that Apple may unveil iOS 6 at the WWDC this June. So, should the hackers wait until iOS 6 is released or should they just continue their work on iOS 5.1 and release the jailbreak? Over 45,000 voters have voted, and here’s what the results look like…

It looks like a lot of people in our community simply can’t wait. 56% of voters think that the hackers should just release the iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak, while only 40% think that they should hold off. The poll will be up for the next 6 days so head over and get your vote in! It’s awesome that pod2g wants to hear from our community before making any decisions.

It's also very important to note that it may actually be worthewhile to wait until iOS 6. If Apple actually announces the new version next month, the jailbreak will have pretty much gone to waste.

What do you think? Should pod2g wait, or release 5.1?

The awesome “iMac Touch” concept [Video]

We love to see new ideas and concepts here at iPD, and every once a while comes an artist with an awesome vision. Personally, I’ve never seen  any mock-ups of an iPad-Mac fusion that looked decent, but Motion graphics and 3D animation student Joakim Ulseth just changed that…

Check out this video of the “iMac Touch,” the touch screen Mac with an OS X and iOS combination platform. Would you buy it?

Sprint’s unlimited data plan is here to stay, regardless of whether iPhone 5 is LTE or not

Sprint’s unlimited data plan is here to stay, regardless of whether iPhone 5 is LTE or not

Sprint is the only major wireless carrier that still offers unlimited smartphone data plans in the US. After the company got the iPhone, we heard many rumors that Sprint would kill its unlimited plan offer. However, it looks like that won’t happen any time soon.

Sprint continued to offer the beloved plan even after the iPhone 4S launched on its network. CEO Dan Hesse says that the plan will still be available after Sprint’s 4G LTE network goes live, and even after the next iPhone launch...

”I’m not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told CNET. “That’s our distinctive differentiator.”

Hesse believes that the unlimited data plan is helping the carrier gain new customers and expand their userbase. “Frankly, it’s a marriage made in heaven. We’re clearly attracting customers from our competitors.” The CEO seems to be on the right track and we’re excited about the fact that the plan will still be available. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all ended their unlimited plans quite a while ago, but Sprint is standing tall with its decision.

pod2g gives us another update on the iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak

Legendary iOS hacker pod2g has given us another update on the status of the iOS 5.1 jailbreak via his Twitter account. We reported earlier this week that the developer had managed to bypass the ASLR already. However, there is still quite a lot of work to be done before an official release.

As you know, jailbreaks are released by our talented hackers for free, and are definitely not their main source of income. They do an amazing job and put countless hours of hard work into these projects for our community. They also do an awesome job of keeping us updated. Which is why it’s important to understand why jailbreaks might take awhile to release, and to respect the developers working on them. Nonetheless, here’s pod2g’s update for us:

“ETA for 5.1 JB : no clue! We’re going to set pieces of the puzzle together this week. We could have issues… Could be 1 month maybe 2… Maybe never… (!)

I know 1 month seems long, but it’s short to work on a project like this when it’s a hobby and you’ve other things to do as well.”

So an exact release date is still unknown, but it’s good to know that pod2g is hard at work on it! We’ll keep you posted as more info is released so make sure to tune in everyday for the latest news!

Is Apple working on a low-end iPhone?

Is Apple working on a low-end iPhone?

Rumors are a huge part of the iOS community and actually add a little excitement to the mix. However, nothing is worse than a washed up rumor that just refuses to die. Once again, there are reports claiming that Apple is looking into making a smaller iPhone.

China Times is claiming that Apple will make a cheaper iPhone to expand its influence to the low-end smartphone market. According to the site’s sources, Apple’s iPhone 3GS is still too expensive to compete with lower-end Android Phones. The solution? Make a cheaper iPhone…

However, it seems very unlikely that Apple would go for an “iPhone Nano.” The company has had incredible success with the iPhone and frankly, it doesn’t need a cheaper model. But of course, unlikely doesn’t mean impossible…

What do you think? Is Apple really interested in making a cheaper iPhone? Would you buy a cheaper model?

New GEVEY Ultra 5.1 SIM Interposer gets released for iPhone 4

Unlocking your iPhone is now easier than it’s ever been. Other than the awesome new SAM unlocking method that was released over the weekend, you can now unlock your off-contract iPhones with AT&T. Futhermore, GEVEY has just released another SIM interposer, and it’s better than it has ever been…

GEVEY’s new Ultra 5.1 SIM interposer for the GSM iPhone 4 now supports even more basebands than previous models. It also brings a number of new features:

-  GEVEY Ultra 5.1 works with any iOS version between 4.1 and and 5.1

-  It works with 1.59, 2.10, 3.10.1, 4.10.1, 4.11.08, and 4.12.01 basebands.

-  New chipset operates under the 3-volt standard to save battery power

-  Enhanced signal strength for strong, consistent voice and data connection

Of course, this method only works with jailbroken iPhones (just like older versions of the interposer). If you can’t get your iPhone unlocked at AT&T and the SAM method hasn’t worked for you, it looks like the new Ultra 5.1 may be your best bet. You can grab it now from Applenberry for only $49.99. Let us know how it works for you!

The iPhone Dev Team rolls out another update for RedSn0w

RedSn0w was updated only a couple days ago but the iPhone Dev Team has been hard at work and has just released another update! Version 0.9.10b8 supports backing up the previous activation tickets from the SAM unlock.

You no longer have to manually go in and back-up your activation tickets. The team has included a simple new option in RedSn0w! Head inside for the download and full release notes:

"Redsn0w 0.9.10b8 adds the ability to backup arbitrary directories or files from your device into a zip file on your Mac or PC. The new button is Extras->Even More->Backup and it requires your device to be jailbroken with the afc2 service enabled (most jailbreaks include that). By default it will backup your activation records from /var/root/Library/Lockdown, which is useful for everyone taking advantage of today’s SAM unlock using Loktar_Sun’s trick (more on that in a later post!)."

So there you have it folks. The unlock process is getting easier and easier as more tools and exploits are found. You download the new RedSn0w tool in the link below. Let us know how you like it!

How to: Unlock your jailbroken iPhone using SAM

Today brings great news for the iPhone community. A new unlock method for jailbroken iPhones has just been released by Chinese hacker Loktar_Sun and has been confirmed by famous iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd.

The unlock method involves using Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artifical Module) package. This is definitely awesome news as you’ll be able to unlock your jailbroken iPhone right now to use on any other GSM network. Head inside for the full step-by-step guide.

All you’ll need is a jailbroken iPhone that can connect to iTunes (that isn’t officially blacklisted), a working Internet connection and the latest iTunes installed. You’ll also need to know the carrier that your device is locked too. Here is the full step-by-step guide courtesty of Laforet:

How to: Unlock your iPhone using SAM

Step 1: Step one: Install Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package. I recommend that you get it from repo.bingner.com since older versions have a different interface and may not work for this purpose.

Step 2: Enter SAM by either going through the settings menu or find the SAMPrefs icon on your springboard. You will need to have the SIM card you intend to use in your phone.

Step 3: Go to utilities and select “De-Activate iPhone”, your ActivationState under “More Information” should now be “Unactivated”

Step 4: With SAM enabled, choose “By Country and Carrier” in “Method”; find your carrier, for some carriers operating more than one Carrier ID you may need to select “SIM ID”; if you pick the wrong one this won’t work.

Step 5: Go to More Information”, copy or write down the IMSI in “SAM Details”, then tap “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”.

Step 6: Go back to the main SAM screen and change your “Method” to manual. Paste or enter the IMSI string we saved in Step 5.

Step 7: Connect your iPhone to your computer and allow iTunes to activate it, double click “Phone Number” parameter at the main device screen and make sure that the ICCID matches that of your SIM card. If not you need to start over from Step 1.

Step 8: Unplug your phone, close iTunes.

Step 9: Disable SAM. The source article says to uninstall SAM and delete your lockdownd profiles; it’s unnecessary.

Step 10: Connect your phone to iTunes again, you should get an error saying that your phone cannot be activated. This is normal. Just close iTunes and open it again.

Step 11: You should see signal bars in a short time, congratulations.

Step 12: Push notifications may stop working after this procedure but can be easily restored by “clear push” utility in SAM followed by connecting to iTunes.

Note: This method will only allow you to use the SIM card that you used to unlock your iPhone with. Switching between SIM cards won’t work. However, this method doesn’t use emergency numbers so you won’t have to deal with the issues associated with SIM interposers.

Let us know how it works for you and head over to our forums if you need any help jailbreaking or unlocking your idevice!

Elderly woman tries to smuggle 216 iPhones in taped beer bottles in China [Video]

Every once a while comes a great idea that wows us all, and than there’s this…

An elderly woman was caught trying to smuggle iPhones in beer bottles from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, China. She was caught crossing the Sha Tau Kok border with 216 iPhone 4s and iPhone 4S’. I’m not sure how an elderly woman with 72 bottles of beer would look normal, but you gotta’ give her credit for trying, right?

The freakin’ beer bottles were cut in half, stuffed with three iPhones each, and glued back together (with transparent tape). If that’s not determination, I don’t know what is. But, unfortunately for the old lady, the officers became suspicious when they saw 72 beer bottles with scotch tape on them. Who would have thought? Head inside for the video of the incident:

pod2g gives us another update on the status of the iOS 5.1 jailbreak

Legendary iOS hacker and developer pod2g let us in on some more info about the progress on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. The good news is that pod2g has bypassed the ASLR issue we reported on earlier this week. The next step of the process is to execute code with a ROP payload. The bad news, however, is that this doesn’t necessarily mean we will see a jailbreak for iOS 5.1 anytime soon.

Of course, there is a lot of progress being made, and the exploits are there. But the process can take months to finish and release. It’s also important to note that pod2g is doing this completely on his own time and for free. It truly is amazing how the community works so hard together simply for the passion of jailbreaking.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more info. If you are in a previous iOS version and want to jailbreak, you can check out our simple and easy to use Jailbreak Wizard to guide you through the process. Next iPhone most likely to launch in October

We reported yesterday about a rumor that claimed that Apple would announce the next generation iPhone at the WWDC in June. However, a much more likely scenario has surfaced.

Apple analyst Gene Muster told investors this morning that Qualcomm is having some supply issues with the 28-nanometer LTE chips. Qualcomm’s MDM9615 LTE chip is believed to be used in the upcoming iPhone, and these supply issues most likely confirm an October launch.

We have reported many times in the past that a fall launch seems much more likely. Launching a new iPhone less than a year after the iPhone 4S seems impractical.

Nonetheless, it looks like Apple won’t be able to launch the iPhone before fall either way, as the chipsets aren’t ready. I guess October it is…

Apple Stores sell 17 times more than the average retail store

Apple Stores sell 17 times more than the average retail store

One of the things that Apple is known for is the pride it takes it in its retail stores. Each Apple store has its own unique and beautiful design, offering customers an amazing shopping experience. So amazing, in fact, that Apple Stores see 17 times more sales than the average retailer.

Research firm Asymco published an article today about Apple’s performance in the retail field, and the numbers are incredible…

Asymco and marketing research company RetailSails found that Apple Stores sale 17 times more per square foot than the average retailer. Popular brands like Guess see around $500 per square foot, while Apple brings in a whopping $6500. The Cupertino company even doubles sales per square feet over Tiffany & Co, the very popular jewelry store. Is that impressive or what?

The results don’t include online sales, which Apple also has done amazingly well in. The company shows no signs of slowing down and only has the brightest of futures.

Sprint’s LTE networks may already be ready to go

Sprint’s LTE networks may already be ready to go

Sprint has been working very hard to catch up to its competitors with LTE deployment and has been planning to launch its new LTE network during the summer of this year.

Although no official statements have been made, an interesting image has leaked today showing that LTE is actually already running in a number of cities.

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo appear to have gotten their hands on an image that shows the building plans for the upcoming LTE roll outs. 8 different cities are listed, including Akron, Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Worth, Nashville, New York, Rialto and Stockton.

Almost all of the cities included are labeled as “complete” in the “ready for testing” category. In fact all of the completed cities have been marked for over a month now. Sprint may very well be very close to launching its first LTE networks.

Sprint is announced two new LTE handsets in 4 days so the carrier may have something up its sleeve to announce. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

10% of men choose the new ipad over sex

As you already know, we LOVE our idevices here at iPD, and we’re sure many of you feel the same way about your beloved Apple products. However, choosing Netflix or Angry Birds on an iPad over getting laid? Well, I don’t know about that one…

According to a new poll put together by RoxyPalace.com, 1 in 10 men would rather have a new iPad than some sexy time with a new girlfriend. That, my friends, is proof enough that the newest iPad is one hell of a device...

10% of men answered that getting a shiny new idevice is better than sex, while 96% of women answered that they’d rather have a new man in their life instead of spend money on gadgets. What’s most interesting about the poll is probably the fact that 71% of both men and women answered that they would rather have a Facetime date first before actually meeting up in person.

What do you think? Do you agree with the poll’s results?

Samuel L. Jackson’s Real Siri (the NSFW Siri ad that we really wanted to see)

The next iPhone to be made out of awesome liquidmetal

For months now, we’ve heard the same boring iPhone rumors over and over again. However, we finally have some new and exciting rumors that we haven’t really heard of in the past.

According to a new article published by ETNews, Apple is apparently working on making the next-generation iPhone out of liquidmetal, a zirconium-based alloy that Apple has exclusive rights to. The company first purchased worldwide exclusivity rights to the alloy back in 2010 and if the rumors are true, we are definitely in for a treat. An iPhone made out of liquidmetal would be one of the toughest smartphones on the market:

"According to industry sources, the next flagship phones of the companies are expected to adopt unprecedented materials for their main bodies, that is, ceramic for the Galaxy S3 and liquid metal for iPhone5, both being thin, light and highly resistant to external impacts. In the meantime, iPhone5 is likely to take liquid metal, an alloy of zirconium, titanium, nickel, copper and so forth having an outer surface smooth like liquid. The new iPhone is expected to make its debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco in June."

Apple recently posted job openings looking to hire liquidmetal engineers so the rumor is definitely a possibility. However, the publication did have on tidbit that seems a little off: the launch date.

Most reports have predicted a fall launch for the next iPhone, but ETNews is claiming that Apple will actually unveil the new idevice during next month’s WWDC. The iPhone 4S was released in October of last year so it seems unlikely that Apple would launch a new iPhone less than a year after.

What do you think? Would you buy an iPhone made of liquidmetal or do you prefer the current glass casing?

pod2g updates us on iOS 5.1 jailbreak

It’s been sort of quiet around the jailbreak community lately as we haven’t had many updates about the 5.1 jailbreak, however pod2g has just let us in on some more info. The legendary pod2g, who was the main hacker behind the Absinthe jailbreak tool, posted a tweet earlier this morning confirming that he has all the necessary exploits to begin jailbreaking iOS 5.1.

”News: we have all exploits required to do a new jailbreak. I’m working on bypassing ASLR at bootup.”

However, this doesn’t mean that we will necessarily see the jailbreak released any time soon. The process make take months to finish and push out. A4 devices have the option of using a tethered jailbreak, but unfortunately, A5 (and A5X) users on iOS 5.1 will just have to wait it out.

We’ll keep you posted as more info is released. Stay tuned!
